Ethan Ransom, a former detective with Scotland Yard, met Dr. Garrett Gibson over a year ago and has been fascinated by her ever since. When three soldiers attack Garrett while she is walking home, Ethan comes to her rescue. Garrett is the only female doctor in England. She is smart and independent; and she knows how to take care of herself. But when Ethan offers her instruction on street fighting, she agrees to let him teach her. Attraction blooms between them. Knowing that his latest mission may be dangerous for anyone close to him, Ethan tries to keep his distance from Garrett before he gets her killed.
We met both Garrett and Ethan in previous books. Since I liked both of these characters, I was looking forward to reading more about them. I thought the romance portion of the story was fine. I was happy that Ethan quickly came to his senses about keeping his distance from Garrett. The government plot was just okay to me. I just didn't feel invested in that portion of the story. My favorite parts of the book were the scenes with West Ravenel getting to know Ethan. I'm looking forward to reading more about West. My rating: 3.5 Stars.

This story and its characters were not likeable to me. In the Author's note Ms. Kleypas says she is paying tribute to a real life female doctor by portraying her in our heroine. To me the result was that our heroine was portrayed more as a doctor. This detracted from the feminine side of Garrett. There was way too much medical detail. It seemed like filler. Hoping for a better story and characters in the next book.
Garrett was introduced in book 2 (if my memory is correct). Garrett is the first and only female physician in England. Ethan was also introduced in book 2 (again- if my memory is correct). And yes, you are correct if you guessed his father was Edmund Ravenel- not a spoiler if you read this synopsis of this book).
Ethan feels things for Garrett and vice versa. There is some "I can't be with you because....." However, this is nicely overcome and doesn't last the whole book. Garrett is intelligent and saves Ethan not once, but twice. While still very satisfying, I didn't enjoy this book like I did the last. Looking forward to West's book.
