Franklin fictionalizes true events that happened in Clarke County, Alabama. Although he takes liberties with the history, his prose is beautiful and literary. That said, the book can be graphic at times, and includes a lot of profanity. Hell at the Breech, however, is an exceptional novel, and a great first one for Franklin. I would certainly recommend it.

I really liked this book! The writing is evocative and the charaters are fully drawn. If I pick up a book during a busy day because I can't wait to find out what happens...need I say more?

We both enjoyed reading Hell at the Breech. This is my third Tom Franklin novel. He certainly has a way with the prose and verbage. I like the flow of his writing. Sometimes I feel like I am part of the action because his prose is so compelling and vivid. I read Smonk and hated it(much too graphic). I read Crooked Letter and loved it. Hell at the Breech is on my list of favorites by this author. I am looking forward to reading other Tom Franklin Novels.
