Alexander McCall Smith, a master of the unexpected and a seamless storyteller, revels in offering us the quirky complications inherent in entanglements that human beings engineer for themselves-entanglements that can be shocking, edifying, compulsive, complicated, and, sometimes, completely disastrous.
