The Heather Blazing is a consumately Irish novel: in love with the land and the sea, divided between the past and the present, and, of course, obsessed with the weather. Colm Toibin illuminates life in a country where everything is political...a beautifully written book, the prose fluid and never flashy, the structure perfectly suited to the story. Toibin weaves past and present together in a way designed to extract the maximum resonance from the juxtaposition.

Irish novelist Toibin offers a profound study of the emotional paralysis which grips a Dublin High Court Judge and his family.
