the story of two English women drawn to India: one, the wife of an English colonial official in the 1920s, and the second, her granddaughter, who wants to find out more about an ancient scandal involving her grandmother. Great characterization of the two women and (from the perspective of someone who has never been to India) vivid descriptions of the country
