I'm a huge fan of pirate tales since reading MaryLu Tyndall's Legacy of the King's Pirates series. Even though that series was drawn to a conclusion a few years ago I still look for and enjoy tales that are set aboard ships. This book in The Midwives series is a fine example of everything I love about high seas romances. At first I was a little underwhelmed by the characters and the plot but as the story unfurled and the unpredictability of the sea and rogue privateers became a factor I couldn't put the book down.
There is no other word than tumultuous to describe this book. The relationship between Phoebe and Rafe (best pirate/privateer name ever) was so realistic. The arguments and the genuine anger didn't evolve smoothly into an easygoing relationship once they got to know each other but it was something of a constant battle not unlike a relationship today.
The secondary character's were fun too. Belinda, Phoebe's sister-in-law was so annoying and well...spoiled...that I almost wanted to skip the parts where she opened her mouth. I suppose that unlikable characters make the story though, don't they? Mel, Rafe's daughter is just so adorable and her canine friend, Fi will melt your heart. I hope Mel gets her own story, she deserves to grow up and get a happy ending! This book really had a great message of persistence and learning to forgive oneself so that, along with the good plot make this a book I can recommend to anyone who loves Christian fiction!

Every so often an author comes around that I just wait with bated breath for their next book. Laurie Alice Eakes is one of those authors! Her books just bring characters to life and you feel so alive as you read them. The first book I ever read by her happened to be the first in The Midwives series. This book, Heart's Safe Passage, is the second novel in this wonderful series and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Like I said above, Laurie Eakes quickly became one of my favorite authors after reading, Lady in the Mist. It is on my keeper shelf:) So when I saw this one I immediately put it on my wish list as a have to get book. And boy am I glad I did!! Heart's Safe Passage is a thrilling yet serious book that I fell in love with. There are some fun characters, including Tabitha and Dominick from the previous book. I personally like when an author brings back old characters. Sometimes that doesn't happen, even when it is a series.
I took to Phoebe very quickly. I think she overreacted at first on the ship but I understood her panic and worry. Not every day you get kidnapped and put on a ship at sea, especially when your sister-in-law is part of the trouble. I personally had a hard time with Belinda and felt like slapping her through the pages more than a couple times. Of course, that just goes to show a good writer. Rafe was a great guy and even though he had his times of being a pain, I really liked him. He is loyal to his daughter, even with the history behind that.
As with the last book, it was interesting to read about the midwife aspect back then. Phoebe helps deliver a baby on a ship and it was neat to read about. They were not as well received back then and they had their share of trouble, that's for sure. This book has a lot of history in it and it shows the culture and different way of life back in that time period. There is one part where Rafe is explaining why he no longer wants anything to do with God that was a bit descriptive for me. I know those things happened back then, but I would rather have done without it.
If you like a book with suspense, adventure and romance, this is the book for you. I love the way Laurie writes and makes you feel like you are out at sea with Rafe and Phoebe. Excellent book that I will enjoy re-reading time and time again!

Very good adventure story. It is the second book in the Midwives series by Laurie Alice Eakes. Highly recommended!
