Be swept away by this Regency romance.

I'd been wanting to try this series and Ruth Axtell's books so I was glad when I got the chance to read this one. Now that I've read book 2 I'm going to have to go back and read the first one to learn the backstory.

A funny coincidence is that right before I read A Heart's Rebellion, I read Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. Coincidence, because this book really reminded me of Northanger Abbey: the clothing, dances, conversations, really the whole Season experience.

I have to admit that I really didn't like Jessamine at first. She is very self-centered and headstrong. But as the story progresses, and especially after a frightening incident, God begins the slow process of molding her into the young lady she is meant to be.

On the whole, A Heart's Rebellion is a sweet, romantic, and fairly light Regency-era adventure. If you are looking for a historical with a Jane Austen-esque flavor this book would be a perfect choice. Great for a quiet evening with tea and book.

(I received a copy of this book from the publisher through TBCN in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are entirely my own.)

A Hearts Rebellion is the sequel to Moonlight Masquerade by Ruth Axtell. We briefly met Jessamine in Moonlight Masquerade and saw that she had deep feelings for Rees Phillips. In A Hearts Rebellion, Jessamine is pining after the newly-wed Rees and refuses to get over her broken heart. Entering her season in London, she tries to heal her broken heart by surrounding herself with other handsome men. While flirting, she finds herself caught up with some men who may not have her best interest at heart and may cause her reputation to be ruined.

Lancelot has taken an interest in Jessamine but she shows him no interest because she does not find him exciting as her other suitors. Despite being snuffed, Lancelot continues to seek out Jessamine and get to know her.

I thought this was a good sequel to Moonlight Masquerade. Personally, I think you will be able to follow along a lot better if you read Moonlight Masquerade before you read this one. I was excited to see Celine and Rees back in the story and see what is going on in their lives.

In regards to A Hearts Rebellion, I was a little disappointed. To me, Jessamine was a little annoying the way she refused to let Rees go and I felt like that dragged on for longer than it should have. But other then that, it was still entertaining and Lancelot was a hero worth swooning over.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher, Revell, in exchange for my honest review. I received no compensation for this review, nor was I required to write a positive review. All opinions stated are my own.

As a reader, one of the things I desire most in a book is characters that stand out. I don't want just a run-of-the-mill person. Don't get me wrong, I want them realistic, but I want them to be well written and fleshed out. And I believe Ruth Axtell has achieved that with her new book, A Heart's Rebellion.

As the book opens we meet two young ladies, Megan and Jessamine, who are participating in a London season. Jessamine is the main female character who is the daughter of a vicar and has been hurt by a wonderful man. Now if you have read Moonlight Masquerade by Ruth Axtell you will recognize several characters in here. Not the least of which is Rees, the man who Jessamine feels betrayed her. So now she sets out to prove to the world, and herself, that he hasn't hurt her and she can catch any man she wants.

The hero is Lancelot Marfleet. And let me tell you, at first I didn't care for him. He is far from your normal hero with the good looks or the great personality. I sympathized with Jessamine when she slapped him(yep, she gives him a good one across the cheek) or got frustrated with him. From the description he is somewhat plain with a long face and red hair, no charming wit or personality. But in time I grew to like him and I saw that what he lacked in social skills he made up for in loyalty, kindness and persistence. Of course, he also happens to be the one Jessamine does not like and can't stand. So when they get together, the sparks do fly!!

Overall this was an excellent book. Ruth Axtell is known for her regency books and if you want a good one, I would urge you to pick this one up. There is a little bit too much description at one point where some liberties are taken with a young lady but I don't feel they were overboard. When Jessamine is bent on destruction we see the consequences of that. I think it was handled quite well though. I am hoping maybe another one will be in store soon that includes these characters I came to know as friends. Well done Ruth!!
