This was a continuation of the 2nd book. It was excellent. It introduced some new characters and kept some of the old. It reads better if you have read the 2nd one but could be read on its own. It does set you up to want to read the 4th book. This whole series is great.
Tanya Huff keeps reminding me why her cool-headed, feisty marine Torin Kerr, now promoted to Gunnery Sergeant, is my favorite of all the kick-ass female military heroines. While this book is not as frenetic as the first two in the series, the mystery of the last book's "Big Yellow" alien spaceship continues to confound. This time Torin is traveling to the Marine Corps training planet Crucible, acting as temporary aide to a major recovering from injury. She suddenly finds herself in charge of a platoon of recruits when their staff sergeant has a medical crisis, trapped in a training scenario gone wrong. I can hardly wait for the next installment!

This one goes off on a somewhat unexpected tangent that actually reminded me of the Alan Dean Foster series The Dammned.
HHowever, I didn't enjoy it as much as the other two. But I'm interested to see what #4 will be like.
