Rereading...
Heart Thief is book 2 of the Celtan Heart Mates series. All the books are wonderful but if I had to pick a favorite, this one would probably be it. The hero and heroine are outstanding. Ruis is a fugitive and more than a bit of a rogue. His society scorns him because he is a Null, not only is he unable to use the Flair their society runs on - but he makes it impossible for others to use theirs. He is a thief who steals to live and indulge his hobby of fixing the old earth devices no one cares about. Ailim is a judge, raised to revere the law and care for her [thoroughly unpleasant] family. As a telempath, Ailim is constantly bombarded by the thoughts and emotions of others and she finds Ruis very restful. Ruis is exiled on pain of death should he return. Of course he returns, Ailim is there and so is his new hideout, the last existing starship that brought their ancestors to Celta...
The moral conflicts between what is legal and what is ethical make this a more powerful story than the first.
One of the strengths of Robin Owens' writing is her believable world-building. She has crafted a fascinating, self-consistent world that she draws the reader into - background information always appears when needed and is never presented out of context. The characters have depth and you see their world, and their stories through their eyes.

'Heart Thief' is wonderful book...much better than the first Celta's HeartMates book. I read the last page of Ruis and Ailim's story with a content sigh of pleasure.
Ruis is a thief who had his family inheritance stolen by his uncle. He struggles with anger and feels he has nothing to contribute to society until he discovers the talent for repairing and using old Celta technology.
Ailim is a fair and valued judge in the Celta law system and head of her family. She recognizes the injustice against Ruis and also sees a man worthy of love and tenderness.
'Heart Thief' is the tale of these two people overcoming the obstacles that would keep them apart.
Robin Owens' creates an interesting futuristic word with a hierarchical family culture, spaceships, talking cats, and magic or "flair". Very enjoyable.

Ruis and Ailim....He's a thief and she's a judge! He stole Rand's Heartgift and now has to leave Celta. He is also a null...which means he can neutralize others' psychic talents.
Ailim...meets him in court before the same council who banishes him to ask for a loan for her family. She actually FEELS emotions and not powers or thoughts from him because of course he has NONE!!! But...they are on opposite sides of the bench and therein lies the excitement and fun because of course man's best cat is again involved only this time it's.....
Samba....an adverturous cat....one devoted to him.....
