The book itself is the direct result of an invitational conference of nationally known researchers held in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Conference discussions informed the participants of the choice of topics and identified many research gaps which needed to be filled. This book can and should be thought of as a starting point as it is hoped that through this volume investigators will be stimulated to develop and implement new directions in research. The authors focus on major methodological issues, calling attention to some contradictory findings and draw attention to the need for different and/or more sophisticated approaches to research about older women. Although aging processes are universal, there are physical and social aspects of gender of particular concern. This is why this text is so important. This volume represents a selective review of health and economic issues and how they relate to older women. It spells out many research issues needing investigation and major resources for doing so, as well as providing new ways of looking at traditional research problems.« less
