Over seven decades of a changing America, through wars and storms, betrayals and reconciliations, Virginia Hume's Haven Point explores what it means to belong to a place, and to a family, which holds as tightly to its traditions as it does its secrets. I love family sagas. This one starts in 1944 when Maren Larsen is a cadet nurse at Walter Reed Army Hospital and she meets Dr. Oliver Demarest whose family spends their summers at Haven Point, Maine. Next we are in 1970 where Oliver and Maren are grappling with their 17 year old daughter, Annie, who has fallen for a young man they don't approve of. In 2008, Annie's daughter, Skye, has brought her mother's ashes to scatter at Haven Point. Maren is forced to tell her granddaughter the whole truth about what happened to her mother, Annie, during the summer of 1970. I found myself totally engrossed in the lives of this family and it felt as if I had visited their summer place along with them. This was the author's debut novel but I do look forward to reading more of her books in the future. If you love family sagas, then you will surely enjoy reading this book.
