If you have never before heard of Harry Potter, let me be the first to say, "Welcome to Earth, dear alien friend!" The second book of the series. The movies do not do justice to the books. The English sense of humor is just fantastic. I bought this for me, not my kids, by the way. They have their own copy!

The eagerly anticipated sequel to the astounding smash hit Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is finally here! No need to wait Harry's back for his second year at Hogwarts, where the infamous Chamber of Secrets has been opened for the first time in 50 years. The monster that is unleashed is literally petrifying Hogwarts students (turning them into stone, that is), and who is the primary suspect? Harry Potter himself. Add to this some enormous spiders, a Deathday Party, a ghost named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls' bathroom, and lots and lots of suspense, and you'll soon find yourself engrossed in another terrific tale in which magic does exist and good eventually triumphs over evil

The 2nd in the series. Still a little light-hearted for the youngsters. I love Gilderoy and especially the Lucius Malfoy. Or maybe it's the actors who portray them. But, then again, women tend to like those "bad boys." LOL! Excellent book for a literature circle. Have students read then view the movie for a compare/contrast.

It's hard to fall in love with an earnest, appealing young hero like Harry Potter and then to watch helplessly as he steps into terrible danger! And in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the much anticipated sequel to the award-winning Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, he is in terrible danger indeed. As if it's not bad enough that after a long summer with the horrid Dursleys he is thwarted in his attempts to hop the train to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to begin his second year. But when his only transportation option is a magical flying car, it is just his luck to crash into a valuable (but clearly vexed) Whomping Willow. Still, all this seems like a day in the park compared to what happens that fall within the haunted halls of Hogwarts.

Chilling, malevolent voices whisper from the walls only to Harry, and it seems certain that his classmate Draco Malfoy is out to get him. Soon it's not just Harry who is worried about survival, as dreadful things begin to happen at Hogwarts. The mysteriously gleaming, foot-high words on the wall proclaim, "The Chamber of Secrets Has Been Opened. Enemies of the Heir, Beware." But what exactly does it mean? Harry, Hermione, and Ron do everything that is wizardly possible--including risking their own lives--to solve this 50-year-old, seemingly deadly mystery. This deliciously suspenseful novel is every bit as gripping, imaginative, and creepy as the first; familiar student concerns--fierce rivalry, blush-inducing crushes, pedantic professors--seamlessly intertwine with the bizarre, horrific, fantastical, or just plain funny. Once again, Rowling writes with a combination of wit, whimsy, and a touch of the macabre that will leave readers young and old desperate for the next installment. --Karin Snelson

When Harry Potter gets a visit from a house-elf named Dobby, he is sent on a magical adventure. At Hogwarts, the Chamber of Secrets has been opened again and only the heir of Slytherin can open it. Then the most likely suspect turns to be Harry himself.

But with his friends, Ron and Hermione, can he save, not only his reputation, but Hogwarts its self? And will he finally destroy Voldemort in the process?

It's all been said before, but the Harry Potter series opens the door to a world of wonderful imagination and genuine humanity. Are we all so jaded that we are deeply thrilled to discover that fine children's literature is still being written? Not just for children, though, this series is every bit as captivating for the adults as the little ones in your house. Hooray for the Boy Who Lived!

It is Harry Potter's 12th birthday and it is his summer vacation with his dreaded family, the Dursleys. Nothing has changed and they still despise everything that has to do with magic. So Harry finds himself locked in a room with bars in front of the only window and a small cat door for his small food deliveries. He wonders what the little house-elf Dobby meant by warning him to go back to Hogwarts school. What did he mean something terrible is about to happen ?
Upon his decision to return back to Hogwarts and freed by his friends the Weasley boys, Ron, Fred and George, all literally seems to go wrong: Ron and Harry can't enter the hidden gate to the train platform, Harry breaks his arm and other small bothersome things hapen.
The annoying new teacher in Defense against the Dark Arts doesn't seem to be that clever either. He's famous because he wrote a lot of books about his adventures but than everytime he uses his magic something seems to go wrong. He's seeking Harry's presence which bothers Harry even more.

When the school is shocked at the finding of the petrified Mrs. Norris, the housekeeper's cat, and a message announcing the Chamber of Secrets has been opened again, it leaves our three friends Hermione, Ron and Harry puzzled. Especially because at the same time Harry heard a voice no one else was able to hear.

When more students are found petrified, Harry rescues a student from a snake attack and learns he can speak Parseltongue, the students non "pureblood" students feel threatened by Harry because the legend says that the Chamber was built by Salazar Slytherin and his heir will be able to open the Chamber of Secrets and unleash the horror within. Slytherin was one of the rare wizards able to speak Parseltongue.

Harry and his friends are now pressured to find the Secret within the Chamber and do whatever they can to protect those that don't come of a pure wizard family.

-

What makes this book very charming is that it continues where the last novel left us: Harry heading of for summer vacation with the Dursleys. No surprise thing haven't changed in the Dursleys opinion about magic but quite shocking that they lock the poor boy away.
Surprisingly I found a lot messages in this book. They went from child abuse, to obnoxiousness and very bad racism, leaving young readers certainly with questions parents should not be shy to answer. The point of racism has such a bad taste it almost made me sick but as life is, people deal with this every day and so this might be a good time to introduce our children into what is right and what is wrong. The way the topic is introduced to the reader is very bold and straight forward which I found is very nice.

Overall I found the book fun to read and Harry grows on me. I'll continue to read the other books in time.

Read my review to Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1).

The second book in the Harry Potter saga starts out with Harry back at the Dursleys for summer vacation with a few changes. He has his own bedroom now instead of being relegated to the cupboard under the stairs. Its actually Dudleys second bedroom (dont get me started on the degenerate waste of space this kid is) and out of the grace and goodness of their hearts, Harry is now using it. This entire attitude demonstrated by the Dursleys resulted in major eye-rollage on my part and activated my gag reflex. These people are truly despicable. Not sure which is the lesser of the two evils for Harryliving with the Dursleys or being attacked by Voldemort.

After a very interesting and exciting first year at Hogwarts, we now find Harry very melancholy as he hasnt heard from his friends all summer and is feeling very lonely. Harry meets Dobby, a mysterious house elf who comes to Privet Drive to warn Harry not to return to Hogwarts, which is not an option for Harry as he considers Hogwarts his true home. Dobby demonstrates very strange and self-loathing behavior by frequently assaulting himself with inanimate objects to punish himself for saying anything, which is a little bizarre because he doesnt really tell Harry much of anything, other than to not return to Hogwarts.

Fortunately for the fans of this series, Harry does not listen to Dobby and through a series of misfortunate events manages to return to Hogwarts to discover an evil creature attacking students. Sadly, Harry is thought to be the one behind the attacks so he has to find out who is behind it before the next attack results in another death, like the one that occurred fifty years prior.

In this book, we get to meet a lot of interesting new characters in addition to Dobby. The new Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher is best-selling author Gilderoy Lockhart who gives arrogance a whole new meaning. He was quite entertaining but very annoying, except the female students think hes wonderful. Harry meets Draco Malfoys father, Lucius Malfoy who we quickly learn is quite evil and now see where Draco gets it from. Rons sister, Ginny is now a first year at Hogwarts and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her and the rest of the Weasley family better. Many new magical creatures are introduced in this book such as Fawkes and Aragog, to name a few. A new ghost is introduced to Harry and his friends. Moaning Myrtle haunts one of the girls bathrooms and though she can be quite annoying proves to be a very interesting character.

I enjoyed learning more about Hagrid and Voldemorts past in this story and getting a birds eye view, if you will, of major events at Hogwarts fifty years prior with the help of an enchanted diary. I loved the scenes with Harry and Ron in the enchanted car; theres more than one and one of them is quite intense so be prepared.

Overall, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets proves to be entertaining on every level. There are a few intense scenes that may be too graphic for young readers and may cause nightmares but older age groups will be thoroughly pulled into this story as Harry navigates the perilous hallways and dark corridors of Hogwarts to stop the evil creature lurking within.

Again I loved this Harry Potter book. This series is enchanting and J. K Rowling does an incredible job of writing in a way to really catch the readers attention. I read most of this book in one day. So far both books that I have picked up i've read all at once. I highly recommend for those who have read the first book to continue on. Harry and Ron continue their curious habits in this book and find themselves in just as much danger as they did in the first book. For me the end was a complete shock that I was not expecting at all! Great book:)

In the second book of the Harry Potter series Rowling takes Harry back to Hogwarts in the form of a flying car that the Weasley boys "borrow" from their Father as they spirit Harry away from his evermore sour tempered relatives the Dursley's who would like nothing better than to see Harry magically make himself permanently disappear. In his new year at school Harry, and his two best friends face many new obstacles as they become detectives and sleuth around the spiraling stairways and dark corners of Hogwarts trying to figure out who is attacking students and leaving cryptic messages on the walls; One of them even being accused and another attacked!

This installment in the series is full of adventure and kept me turning the pages, it was a bit fast paced and the ending could have been spread out more, and explained in more detail as far as the details but in all I enjoyed the book, and am looking forward to continuing the series.

The second installment of the blockbuster Harry Potter series ratchets up the suspense and darkness, but retains the quirky creativity and engagingly whimsical magic of the first. Now in his second year at Hogwarts, Harry finds himself in the midst of a grand mystery yet again as a dark force is unleased and starts attacking students. His best friends, Ron and Hermione, aide and abide him again, and author J. K. Rowling uses her grand writing skills to weave a tapestry of grand, stand-alone adventure, while also expanding the narrative to lay more groundwork for the overarching, epic story that ultimately stretches across 7 novels. This is a near-flawless series of true literature that can be enjoyed by both young and old alike. If you loved "Sorcerer's Stone", don't miss "Chamber of Secrets"!

I really need to take plenty of time between HP books, because I find it so clunky the way Rowling reminds her readers of facts established in previous books. These books are just so creative and entertaining! This book was so fun and easy to read, you really get immersed in the world!
Harry Potter is back at Hogwarts for his second year. After arriving at the school in a flying car and almost getting expelled for performing magic outside of school he begins the school year. There is a new Professor for the Defense of the Dark Arts class and a new Slytherin Seeker (Hint: It is someone Harry and the rest are NOT fond of at all). Not long after he arrives, a message is painted on a wall: "The Chamber of Secrets Has Been Opened..." Harry, Ron and Hermione go through a variety of antics to figure out what the Chamber of Secrets IS and why this message has the professors and students so scared. I really enjoyed the parts of this book that were not in the movie, such as Nearly Headless Nick's "Deathday Party" and several parts involving Percy Weasley.
I am so very glad I finally decided to pick up this book series (I feel like I'm the only one in the world who has not read it yet!)

Series: Harry Potter Series, #2
From Our Editors
The Barnes & Noble Review
J. K. Rowling continues her phenomenally popular Harry Potter series with yet another tale of magic, mirth, and mayhem. Like its predecessor, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (the first book in the series), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is chock-full of fascinating characters, frightful events, and fun wizardry.
Harry's on summer break after completing his first year at the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, and his aunt, uncle, and cousin are as mean as ever, trying at every turn to keep him from fulfilling his destiny as a wizard. Their efforts to prevent his return to Hogwarts are aided by an unknown force: a mysterious elf who shows up and warns Harry that he must never return to the school. Before departing, the elf performs a bit of mischievous magic that is blamed on Harry. As a result, Harry not only gets a stern warning from Hogwarts for using magic in the "real" world; he is also locked away by his aunt and uncle in a tiny closet beneath the stairs.

Harry is eventually rescued by his classmates and friends, the redheaded Weasleys, but getting back to Hogwarts still proves to be a challenge. When he finally does get there, his troubles quickly multiply. Someone has opened the door to the Chamber of Secrets, releasing a deadly monster with the power to kill. Several classmates turn up petrified, and in addition to trying to puzzle out who the culprit is, Harry finds himself a prime suspect. The truth lies down the end of a trail marked by a magical diary with invisible ink, a ghost who hides inside a toilet, a flying car, a pompous new teacher with a talent for hyperbole, and some ghastly giant spiders. When one of Harry's friends is imprisoned and another is turned to stone, Harry is forced to once again confront his archenemy, the Dark Wizard Voldemort, who has a whole new bag of nasty tricks up his sleeve.

Rowling packs this tale with plenty of adventure and action, keeping the pace fast and furious. There's plenty of humor, too -- both subtle and bold -- as well as a few moral lessons. With overlapping themes that range from the simple (treating others with courtesy) to the sophisticated (racism), Rowling's Potter tales should appeal to readers of all ages -- the young as well as the young at heart.

Part 2 of a wonderful series of children's book. Its the new fairytale of the century. Creative, entralling and utterly riveting. In this installment of Harry Potter, Something awful is going on at Hogwarts. Students it seems are being petrified, no one can understand why this is happening, just like no one could understand why it was happening decades ago. Its up to Harry Potter and his friends to figure out why its happening, and why some wizardly talents are just not good to have.

The CoS was my least favorite in the HP series. I thought Prof. Lockhart's character and involvement took up too much time and overshadowed the rest of the story. The only thing I enjoyed about this book was the intro of Dobby, the house elf, though I would have liked for Rowling to include him in more of the book than he was. Overall, it isn't a boring story and fits in nicely with the flow of the series. I just didn't particularly care for Lockhart and thought Rowling gave too much to that character.

When the Chamber of Secrets is opened again at the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, second-year student Harry Potter finds himself in danger from a dark power that has once more been released on the school.

In this second entry in the amazingly popular Harry Potter series, Harry is suffering a horrible summer break after his first year at the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Basically confined to his room by his vile Uncle Vernon and putrid Aunt Petunia, Harry can't wait to return to Hogwarts. However, when he is visited by a nervous yet magical house-elf he is warned that he will be in great peril if he returns to Hogwarts--a warning he chooses to ignore. Upon his return to school, Harry and his best friends Ron and Hermione investigate the true story of the legendary Chamber of Secrets but before they know it a mysterious force begins turning the other students to stone--and Harry is soon thought of as the main suspect. Could this be the peril that the house-elf warned him about or is something even more dangerous in store for Harry?

Harry potter has mever played a spoer while frying on a broomstick. He's never worn a cloak of invisibility, befriended a giant, or helped hatch a dragon, All Harry knows is a miseravle life with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley. Harry's room is a tiny closet at the foot of the stairs, and he has't had a birthday party in eleven years.

(Ages 9 and older)

Harry returns to Hogwarts despite a warning from a mystery house elf. Hogwarts is disrupted by a hidden monster in the castle that petrifies its victims claimed to have come from the chamber of secrets. Fingers point to Harry because of his rare ability to speak to snakes. Another great adventure by J.K. Rowling. The book is a slighty different account of events that makes it that much more interesting.

The Harry Potter series was definitely one of the best I've ever read... I had so much fun standing and waiting in line each time a new book came out, I'm really disappointed that the series is over, but it had a fantastic ending.

This book was significantly more entertaining than the first one, and a bit more suspenseful too, so it was just better all around! I felt like the plot moved along more quickly as well, which made for a much more enjoyable read. It seems like there was a bit more for adults in this one, and that makes things more fun for everyone.

However, one of the things about knowing there are seven books, and that this is only the second one, is that it doesnt quite have the punch that Im sure it initially did. Ive seen a couple of the movies down the line, so I know which characters are or are not in danger at this particular point in the story. Which is definitely my own fault, I should have known better yet that still doesnt ruin the story for me.

J K Rowling's sequel to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone carries on where the original left off. Harry is returning to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry after the summer holidays and, right from the start, things are not straightforward.

Unable to board the Hogwarts express, Harry and his friends break all the rules and make their way to the school in a magical flying car. From this point on, incredible events happen to Harry and his friends--Harry hears evil voices and someone, or something is attacking the pupils. Can Harry get to the bottom of the mystery before it's too late?

As with its predecessor, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is a highly readable and imaginative adventure story with real, fallible, characters, plenty of humour and, of course, loads of magic and spells. There is no need to have read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to enjoy this book. However, if you have read it, this is the book you have been waiting for. (Ages 9 to Adult).
