This dark combination of horror, magic, and covert agencies with a modest overarching plot line that will slide into the rest of the books, is for fans of V.E Schwab, Melissa F Olsen, and to a lesser extent authors like John Connolly and Preston-Child.

The story unfolds at a decent pace, intertwines Harmony and a family tragedy into a totally expected confrontation at the end, and blends police procedural, covert ops, and demons well. It has little in the way of humor to offset the noir atmosphere, but the ending is by no means bleak.

Not for everyone, but zombie, dystopian, and dark demon story lovers will enjoy this. Just don't expect the dry wit of Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim.
