This book made me sick to my stomache. Not just because it was gory. Harris has taken his iconic characters and perverted them into cartoonish reflections of their former selves. It is long winded, gruesome, and generally horrible. I am a huge fan of Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs and this was a sore disappointment.

I definitely did not enjoy this book as much as Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs. It seemed like it was mostly just gruesome for gruesome sake.

This was a great book, as are all of Thomas Harris' books, except the first one. He is a wonderful descriptive writer but doesn't go overboard. Hannibal is scary enough to keep you up at night but too intrigued to put it down.

Sequel to "The Silence of the Lambs." Genius, man of taste and cannibal Hannibal Lecter is still on the run, but before long his path crosses that of disgraced FBI Agent Clarice Staling a second time... with explosive results. Even more gripping and disturbing than the Ridley Scott movie.

Some people didn't like this book because of its ending. I loved it mainly because of its ending - it is so original and different from the tons of serial killer books out there...well written, and different from the movie (different ending adn much more depth. Of course, like all Harris' books, it isn't for the faint of heart. Liked it alot!

Fantastic book, pretty graphic, but that's what keeps us going, right?
bostonirish avatar reviewed Hannibal (Hannibal Lecter, Bk 3) on + 15 more book reviews
This book is somewhat more of a character study than the more traditional thrillers posed by Harris's earlier books: while it does have some murders and gore, it focuses much more on the who and why than on the action itself. A notable exception is the ending, which (unlike the film based on this book) is really quite graphic. (The film's ending is extremely different in all respects.)

I personally found this to be a fascinating read, but also recognize that its divergence in tone and ending from the previous novels may put off some readers. That said, if you liked the previous novels and want to know what makes Hannibal Lechter tick... this is the way to find out.

Harris delivers a tight, exciting novel with Hannibal. The Clarice Starling character works for me, not the deepest development, but enough so you care about her. Twisted anti-hero Hannibal Lecter is depicted as a kind of super-man, not quite believable, but close enough to thrill you. Harris fills in all the crevices of his tale with intriguing detail. Overall a good read.

Personally, this is my favorite of Harris' series because it delves into the world of who Hannibel Lecter really is. There are a couple spots that make the reader want to squirm, but for those who love trying to figure out the psyche of truly twisted characters, this is right up your alley.

Clarice Starling is in a spot. Her career is on the skids and her only ally seems to be the one man she doesn't want to see...at least not without bars between them. Hannibal wants to help Clarice, but a strange change is going on in him, as well. This is the last REAL book in the series so far and it's a good one. Not as good as Silence of the Lambs, but...what is? The ending comes out of nowhere and is much different than the movie. A lot creepier. I still hope that someday the series will have another real chapter, but who knows?

This book isn't as good as Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs, but still worth reading. Bits of it are difficult to read because of the gore (which, oddly, didn't bother me in the first two books). The ending is different, and I believe much better, than the ending that was written for the movie.

Remember the Gentleman cannible, genuis, Hannibal Lector, in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS? This is the sequel. It's been seven years since Dr. Lector escaped from custody. Agent, Clarice Starling continues the hunt, along with two other officers who all have their own reasons for finding Dr. Lector. All 3 will get their wish, but only one will live long enough to savor the reward. . . . A very riveting and terrifynig read.

Red Dragon was brilliant. Silence of the Lambs was even better. Hannibal - not so much.

I do not understand why Harris is trying to make Lecter a sympathetic character. I do not believe it can be done. It certainly wasn't down with this book. I'm not going to waste my time with the sequel - Hannibal Rising.

The second star is because it is a compelling read because of the writing and story-telling ability of the author. I wish he'd find someone else to write about.

Horror lit\'s head chef Harris serves up another course in his Hannibal \"The Cannibal\" Lecter trilogy, and it\'s a pièce de résistance for those with strong stomachs. In the first book, Red Dragon (filmed as Manhunter), Hannibal diabolically helps the FBI track a fascinating serial killer. (Takes one to know one.) In The Silence of the Lambs, he advises fledgling FBI manhunter Clarice Starling, then makes a bloody, brilliant escape.

Years later, posing as scholarly Dr. Fell, curator of a grand family\'s palazzo, Hannibal lives the good life in Florence, playing lovely tunes by serial killer/composer Henry VIII and killing hardly anyone himself. Clarice is unluckier: in the novel\'s action-film-like opening scene, she survives an FBI shootout gone wrong, and her nemesis, Paul Krendler, makes her the fall guy. Clarice is suspended, so, unfortunately, the first cop who stumbles on Hannibal is an Italian named Pazzi, who takes after his ancestors, greedy betrayers depicted in Dante\'s Inferno.

Pazzi is on the take from a character as scary as Hannibal: Mason Verger. When Verger was a young man busted for raping children, his vast wealth saved him from jail. All he needed was psychotherapy--with Dr. Lecter. Thanks to the treatment, Verger is now on a respirator, paralyzed except for one crablike hand, watching his enormous, brutal moray eel swim figure eights and devour fish. His obsession is to feed Lecter to some other brutal pets.

What happens when the Italian cop gets alone with Hannibal? How does Clarice\'s reunion with Lecter go from macabre to worse? Suffice it to say that the plot is Harris\'s weirdest, but it still has his signature mastery of realistic detail. There are flaws: Hannibal\'s madness gets a motive, which is creepy but lessens his mystery. If you want an exact duplicate of The Silence of the Lambs\'s Clarice/Hannibal duel, you\'ll miss what\'s cool about this book--that Hannibal is actually upstaged at points by other monsters. And if you think it\'s all unprecedentedly horrible, you\'re right. But note that the horrors are described with exquisite taste. Harris\'s secret recipe for success is restraint.

Sigh. I have a feeling that this was written because someone bullied or harassed Mr. Harris into it. It seems to be about some other, different Hannibal Lecter. Not the one we've grown to know and cringe from in the first two novels. The writing isn't bad, exactly, it's just not consistent with the other two works. I don't want to rag on Mr. Harris, he's one of the most entertaining writers I've ever read, but this one just didn't seem to 'click'.

the book was definitely better than the movie; however, I along with several of my friends, witnessed the filming of the house by the lake scenes, at the end of the movie/book. They used an old home in Richmond. We sat across the street for hours and sighted Julieanne Moore, Ray Liotta and Anthony Hopkins. He waved to us and said hello. He also had a [body] double that was eerily similar looking!
