Henry "Hank" Moody, portrayed by David Duchovny, is a fictional character who serves as the protagonist of the Showtime television series Californication. Moody is an erratic but esteemed writer who frequently becomes embroiled in bizarre and in some cases scandalous situations.

However shallow Moody may come across as being, most episodes of Californication reveal at least some degree of depth to his persona, in many cases exposing a surprisingly vulnerable Hank, especially in relation to Karen and their daughter, Becca.

The character is loosely based on Henry "Hank" Chinaski, the alter ego of Charles Bukowski portrayed in his some of his novels. The plot of Moody's sexual conquest and affairs with women is clearly influenced by Bukowski's novel Women, portraying Chinaski's life in his 50's as a renowned writer and living life like a rock star.

God Hates Us All (ISBN 978-1416598237), a paperback novel published by Simon Spotlight Entertainment on September 15, 2009 as a tie-in to the Californication television series, is attributed to "Hank Moody".
