A very interesting read - however, I feel the author allowed her 20th century ideas to enter this 18th century story.

This was an inspiring book about a slave who learns to read, and falls in love with her master's son. One of my favorite Rinaldi's.

This book is expertly written, and you can tell that it was written with lots of hard work. The story rotates around a young woman named Phillis. She is a slave (though the family does not like to call her so) in a some-what wealthy home, and is used as a showpony due to a keen skill for poetry. The book does give a pretty accurate look back in time, but expect some harsh truths.
