The spine calls it "paranormal romance" and it was shelved in the romance section, but after reading it I have decided that my best description of it would be an urban fantasy for romance readers. This book is the first of what looks to be a series, so there is an open ended feeling to it that die-hard romance readers who need a conclusion may not appreciate, but I personally liked it and it made me want to read more of this series. I liked the gorgeous cover, great fight scenes, an unusual heroine, and great banter and humor. I wondered about Bones being VERY similar to Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Cat being a little immature sometimes. Overall - fun read. I'd recommend it.

An urban fantasy about a half human/half vampire heroine who teams up with a vampire bounty hunter to hunt down evil vampires. First book in the series with lots of fast paced action and fight scenes and a steamy romance.
However the main character comes across as juvenile and the rest of the characters are more caricatures than three dimesional people, defined by their ethnicity. So the English characters use words like bloody and bollocks and bleedin' with an absurd frequency; the African-American female can't have a conversation without using the word "child" to puntuate what she is saying; the Latina vampire uses, "nina" and "si" instead of yes. These characters don't talk like real people. They talk like ethnic stereotypes. Which is a shame because the story itself is entertaining and suspenseful.

A half-vampire heroine borne from a rape...a full-vamp bounty hunter...and a whole flock of bad vamps that need to be taken out. I loved this book. It was fast-paced and engrossing, even if the diaglogue could use a little help. This is one of the only books in my recent reading history that left a little lump in my throat at the emotional scenes. I'm looking forward to the next installments of the series.

Halfway to the Grave features a half-vampire heroine named Cat who kills vampires in revenge for certain *injuries* her mother suffered -- Cat is the result. Shes quite a young heroine (16-years old when she starts killing and is only 22 or so in this book) and it sometimes shows in her choices. Through dumb-luck & sheer rage she manages to kill at dozen or so vamps over the years, but meets her match in a Master Vampire/Bounty Hunter nicknamed Bones. Cat ends up partnering with him to go after bad vampires and it takes much of this first book in the series for her to accept that there are any good vampires.
After Bones trains her in the skills necessary to keep herself alive against older, stronger vampires, Cat is as tough as they come and has a smart mouth, but she is still insecure and hates herself for what she is (with a lot of help from her mother, who needs a lot of counseling in child rearing, IMO). She is strong and talented in fighting and throwing knives, but its through hard work and training (with some genetic help, of course).
Initially, I couldn't imagine that Bones was going to be the hero. He was physically & verbally rough on our heroine, and his Englishness seemed almost like a caricature (Blimey!) and was grating. I came to see that this was an act, a part of a personna he uses to carry out his chosen profession. He evolves into a yummy hero who respects Cat and her abilities, is tolerant of her foibles and best of all, their growing love isnt Written! Destiny! Or Fate! Its genuine & the obstacles to their relationship seem real and open-ended.
I found some of the action scenes a bit hard to follow, but many others were exciting and visually appealing. There is not a lot of mythology to learn in this first book and it comes in small, agreeable doses. This book isnt a Romance, of course, but romantic elements are there and whether obvious or only hinted at, satisfying. It also isnt a boink-fest, so if you want multiple, steamy sexual encounters youll have to read book 2 (One Foot in the Grave) ;) Grade A-

This book was very good. Excellent start to the series. Can't wait to read the next one. I loved the main characters.
I'm not usually a Romance novel reader, but my husband was trying to be nice and picked out some books for me. I needed something light-hearted to read and found it in this book. For a romance novel, the plot was actually entertaining and kept me interested. Character development was fair for the lead but lacking for anyone else. The book did tend to have some gore in some points and drifted to the dark a time or two but overall a fair to good read.
I found the ending quite abrupt. It was almost as if the author decided that she would write a series in the last chapter and ended the book. Although this was a fun and light read, I'm not sure if I will read the next book in the series.

What an amazing book! I'll admit that the first time I tried to read this book, the only thing I could think of is how much the main character was like "Spike" from Buffy the vampire slayer so I put it down to choose another from my appallingly large pile of "TBR" books. I picked it up again (as the pile is not so large now), and got past my first impression, and was glad that I tried again! The chemistry between the two main characters is amazing! I read it in less than a day, and am almost done with the 2nd book in the series (also amazing). I hope she writes more in this series, as the storyline, the action, and even the sex scenes are very well done!!!!

You just fall in love with these characters, especially Bones. I think its amazing how the author made me fall in love with men that have british accents, considering you can't hear the book, means she gives the characters great voice. I highly highly highly recommend this book and this whole series to anyone who likes a little mystery, little action, and some hot romance!

Great start to a great series. Not the best in the series but gets you interested. The story finished with a cliff hanger and I read the next book to find out what happens. THAT book is the reason to read this book. Characters are interesting and if you ever loved Spike from Buffy, you'll love the male lead in this series, whom I am certain is based on Spike. Frost creates some of her own vampire mythology which is further developed in next books. The pleasure of this book, besides the developing romance, is a strong female lead. Took me a bit to warm to her but she's become one of my favorite heroines in the genre. Love scenes are a bit steamy but if you read LKH, they're pretty tame and a lot of glossed over love scenes (going from kissing to the next morning in a sentence). But I consider this book a launching point into a love story that goes over several books and (I hope) is still yet to be finished.

Really enjoyed this book. Frost tells a good story without thrusting hot bodies every other page. Soft porn wrapped in the paranormal is not my genre. This is plenty sexy, but with a good story line and more believable dialogue. I would put Frost up there with Briggs and Harrison. I am looking forward to reading Bk2 in this series.

I have been wanting to read this series for a long time. I ended up getting the audio book on sale at Audible.com. This was an absolutely excellent book. The audio book was very well done and even made the story more fun. To date there are five book in the series; the sixth book One Grave at a Time comes out in August 2011.
Twenty two year old Cat has always known she is half-vampire, she has been trying to constantly prove to her mother that she's not evil by slaying vampires in her spare time. Then Cat tries to slay the wrong vampire and ends up confronting a vampire named Bones. Bones is trying to stop a vampire run human slave ring and he would love to train Cat and have her help him on his mission.
Initially Cat comes off as a bit whiny and shrill, but she grows on you over time. Cat is an interesting mix of warm understanding, compassion and blood-thirsty vampire killer. Bones is the one who really steals the show; he is ruthless yet kind and understanding and sexy all at once. There is a lot of humor throughout too, which breaks up the tension and had me laughing out loud a number of times. Frost is very good at creating witty dialogue between the characters.
The thing that Frost does an absolutely outstanding job on is creating tension between Cat and Bones. Cat and Bones have excellent chemistry but have trouble with timing a relationship between all the other things going on. Frost does a wonderful job of making us wish Cat and Bones could just make it work out between themselves over and over again throughout the story. Somehow it never gets old and you constantly yearn for them to be happy together. There are also some excellent steamy scenes between the two; they are all very tasteful and well done.
While the training and tension between Cat and Bones is what propels the story forward the most, there is a great plot here too. The mystery behind the missing girls and which vampires are involved is well done and engaging. The world created is nothing special, pretty much your typical vampires in the shadows kind of world. I am hoping that the world is expanded on and filled out in future books. Some of Cat's personal issues will break your heart; the way her mother treats her and some of Cat's past relationships really make you wish she could finally get a break. There is plenty of action in this book too, making it heavy on the urban fantasy side and not strictly paranormal romance.
The book ends well, but will have readers desperate to read more. What happens at the end made me sad and mad beyond belief, but I think it will make for an excellent story.
Overall I was absolutely enraptured by the story. The characters are what really drive this story. Cat and Bones are interesting, have a lot of depth, and have absolutely wonderful chemistry. The tension between the two is exquisitely done and made the book hard to put down. I am dying to read the next book in this series, One Foot in the Grave. If you are a fan of vampire urban fantasy or vampire romance you have got to give this series a try.

Had a little trouble with this one. I guess a little Buffy knowledge is a dangerous thing, since I could not quit comparing the main male character to Spike in the TV series.
The characters are unique and different. Cat, born of an unwilling mating between a vampire and a human, is out there fighting the vampires. She is moderately successful and then she meets Bones, who trains her and becomes her companion.
Overall, this book was good, but I did not think it was great. I found my interest lagging in the last third, and I got really tired of the whole "I have to kill vampires to get back at my father" speeches.

I was pleasantly surprised by Halfway to the Grave. I had no expectations when I started it, but when I was halfway through (no pun intended), I realized how much I was really enjoying it. I thought Cat and Bones were wonderful together. They made a great couple, both on and off the field. I felt that their feelings for each other were genuine. Cat annoyed me with her whole "all vampires are evil" spiel (thanks to her mom being rapped by a vampire, thus resulting in Cat),though she started to see the light because of her relationship with Bones. There were some moments of extreme violence, but I thought it worked well with the situation at the time. I have to say that I was slightly disappointed with the turn of events in the end. I look forward to see how the author plays with it in the next book.

I came to Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series a little late in the game -- the first book was released in 2007 -- but I am so glad I finally got my hands on a copy of Halfway to the Grave! Not since Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse or Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson has a character charmed me as much as Cat Crawfield.
Half-vampire, half-mortal, 22-year-old Cat has spent her post-pubescent years on a nightly hunt for vampires. Using her extra vampire-derived abilities and her very human female ones, she tracks and seduces vampires in bars, lures them away and stakes them in a never-ending quest for vengeance for her mother's attack by a vampire, which ended in her rare birth.
As a lead character, Cat is plucky, reckless and endearing all at once. But even she meets her match when she unsuccessfully tries to bag Bones, a British master vampire who also happens to be a rogue bounty hunter, tracking and killing his own kind for money. When her ambush of Bones goes bad, she reluctantly agrees to team up on their shared mission -- vampire slaying. Through rigorous training, makeovers and covert missions with ghouls, ghosts and chop-shop operators, Cat begins to change her broad negative opinion of vampires, and develop traitorously affectionate feelings for platinum-haired Bones.
The main plotline -- involving a human trafficking ring and a healthy dose of human and vampire politics -- is sound, but the inter-character relationships are the shining star of this novel. I loved the interactions between Cat and Bones most of all. The dialogue is so funny, I honestly laughed at loud at times. And let's be honest: if there's been a sexier male lead in the genre, I can't name him. Bones absolutely sizzles in every page he's on, and is the perfect dichotomy of bad boy/hero. However, some of the relationships were less satisfying. I really disliked Cat's exchanges with her mother, and found that character to be absolutely loathsome. No wonder the poor girl has issues.
I could keep raving, but the other positive reviews for this series can tell you the rest. Frost is a wonderful author -- one book in, and I'm already a fan. I can't wait to begin One Foot in the Grave to see what lies ahead for my favorite new vampire slayer. (Sorry, Buffy.)

I picked this up due to the many positive comments I read on GRs. I was only 12 pages in and already thinking Cat was a trip. I absolutely love Bones' dry sarcastic wit. It was very funny how it stopped Cat in her tracks.
As a vampire hunter, Cat is ruthless - all vampires are bad so just kill them even before they do anything overtly evil. Bones is one of her attempted takedowns and unfortunately for Cat, he is too quick for her and to sensual to resist. The push and pull between them is exciting. The sexual antics are sometimes violent but refreshing. Bones lures Cat in with promises of finding out who her father is but that must be a storyline for another book since it wasn't touched on at all.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it in one sitting. Can't wait to delve into the further adventures of Cat and Bones.

A decent book of its genre. I wasn't blown away because it was a bit too much Harlequin romance and the characters are shallower than most of the graves in the story. It's an ugly ducking story with our heroine emerging from awkwardness into a drop dead gorgeous, red-headed, kick-butt, vampire murdering machine thanks to the unconditional love of a vampire. Don't look for Buffy here, though, because Joss isn't around to imbue life into the living and dead. Anything you feel for these characters, you are bringing with you, because Ms. Frost isn't providing anything beyond the rote. With so many samplings in the genre, I'm not sure I'll pick up another book in the series unless I hear the series really starts to come into its own later on.

This book was a five star book for me. It's one of my favorite stories. It follows the story of Cat, a halfhuman/halfvampire hybrid who, when she's not in college, hunts evil vampires. Bones is the intriguing master vampire who teaches her to hone her abilities to become an even better fighter. I loved the author's writing style. She has a way of sucking you in to the story and not letting go. This book will hold your interest from the start to finish. It's fast-paced, fun, amusing, sexy, and creative. The heroine is physically strong yet vulnerable in many ways. The hero is incredibly sexy, but also lethal. He is amazing.
There are some mild similarities between this book and the TV show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", but there are so many differences that I didn't think of this as a ripoff of the show. While there is some steamy romance in the book, and let me tell you those scenes are very good, romance is really not the focus of the story. This first story in the Night Huntress series focuses on eliminating evil vampires who prey on humans and vampires alike. The ending will leave you unsettled, but get the second book at the same time you get this one so you know immediately what happens next.
Cat and Bones are two of the best vampire characters I've come across in paranormal and urban fantasy genres. They have such good chemistry. Their repartee had me laughing out loud. Bones is incredibly funny with his British witticism and unabashed way of talking. Get this book. It's even worth buying if you don't mind spending a few bucks at a bookstore.

Bones is incredibly funny with his British witticism and unabashed way of talking. Get this book. It's even worth buying if you don't mind spending a few bucks at a bookstore.

I laughed and cried----ok I did not cry, but I did laugh. The character Cat was a bit much for me until she found her humor halfway into the book. I had a hard time getting through the first part of the storyline, as there is only so much "heroine learning how to kick a$$" that I can stand. However, once the relationship between Cat and Bones began, the fun began, and so did the hot sex. For some reason, I kept hearing Cat in a mix of Chandler Bing and Ross Gellar during her internal monologues. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it for those who want some lightness with their vampires.

This was a very good book. Just enough romance and plenty of action. I can't wait to see if gets back with Bones somewhere in the series.

This book has sat on my shelf for a while. Wow it was really good. Cat and Bones make a great team, how can't you love them together. Her mother makes an interesting distraction. Can't wait to read book two.
WARNING: Might have some spoilers...
A fun read. I have to admit with one of the reviews that the characters seem like caricature of different ethnicity (especially since some of these folks have been vampires for hundreds of years so it seems like they would lose some of their ethnic ways) but I still find it worthwhile.
I like that Cat is so immature in this book and you get to slowly watch her expand her view. Steamy sex scenes will do that to a person. At first I was annoyed with how prejudice she was but then her mother has been telling her there was something wrong and evil with her all her life for being an half vampire so I guess it makes sense. I'm surprised she is so well adjusted and not a serial killer. Oh, wait. She is a serial killer.
Things I have a hard time with is how Cat reacts to the deaths of her love ones. She seemed to move on rather quickly.
I love the rude banter between the characters. I know some people would be depressed by the ending but keep in mind that this is a series, so good things will happen later. I also enjoyed the search for Hennessey (the bad vampire in here). Overall, she created a really cool world and I look forward to read more.

This series grows and grows on me. Can't wait til the next one!
This book was handed to me by my neighbor when it first came out. I immediately fell in love with Cat and Bones and their group of friends. There is sexy vampires, ghouls, and ghosts as well as a wonderfully passionate love story. I loved this book so much it was torture waiting for the next installment. Jeaniene is now my favorite author and I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a sexy, action packed, slightly british accented read!!
This was a pretty good try for a first book. A little long on the training descriptions, but all in all very entertaining and I would recommend it to everyone who like this genre as I do.
The story was very good, the ending was not what I had expected and had hoped for. Not the most erotic book I've read, but it was only a paranormal romance. Good read though!
great series

I completely loved this book. Cat and Bones are now my all time favorite couple. Bones is just so sexy and their interactions are really funny. The ending didn't make me too happy, but I believe it will all work out in the next book and I cannot wait to read it.
I listened to this book on audio so any name misspellings can be attributed to myself being too lazy to bother looking things up. Any other mistakes are entirely my own and are either due to my being distracted by driving and/or my piss poor memory. I usually take notes when I read but its hard to take notes when driving without taking out some fellow schlub just trying to get home from work intact.
Cat is the offspring of a human woman who was raped by a brand new vampire. He still had swimmers when he attacked her mom so Cat is human with some neat-o extras. Her eyes flash green when shes all worked up (just like the vamps in this book), she can move at almost superhuman speed, shes stronger than your average college gal and she can booze it up without getting her tummy pumped. In order to avenge her mom (who was a real bitch for dumping her angst on her innocent child, btw) she slays vampires. Mom is only happy when Cat tells her that shes beheaded another monster. I didnt like Mom. Mom was selfish and needed psychological help. I liked her even less as the book went along. Yeah, I get that she was traumatized but what she did to Cat was pretty traumatizing too. Anyway, one night Cat goes after a vamp named Bones who is on to her game. The two have a major smack down and Bones, intrigued by his tough little kitten, wants her to stick around and coerces her into a deal. Cat finds herself pairing up with Bones to weed out and destroy only the evil vampires. But Cat has issues dealing. Shes been raised to believe that all vamps are evil creatures but she has feelings for sexy Bones that he wont let her deny.
I loved this book, despite the mom hate. It was fun (as well as funny), gloriously violent, and pretty darn sexy. Bones and Cat have amazing chemistry and their love for one another was really sweet. Cat wasnt a bitch and I liked her a lot. Bones was surprisingly tender and patient with her. He put up with a lot of crap and frustration and dealt with it well. Especially when she consistently murdered people he wanted to interrogate. Instead of getting super angry hed spout out funnies such as: Youre not a woman. Youre the grim reaper with red hair! Youve got to love a guy with patience and a sense of humor. As a bonus, I never felt lost or bored as I usually do when reading some of these paranormal/urban fantasy type books. I have to say that the cliffhanger end really aggravated me and thats why I cant give this book 5 stars.. I dont have book #2 here on audio and now I have to go track down #2 to continue the story. Grrrrrrr.

Loved it! I wasn't too sure about it at first, but then I got pulled into it. It's a quick read, and it leaves you yearning to read the next one. I'm not sure if I can wait for the next one to be available for swap. I can't wait to see where the series leads. It's a well written, suspenseful thriller, with plenty of twists and turns. The strong heroine and even stronger vamp bounty hunter make sure that there's never a dull moment. If you're a Charlaine Harris or JR Ward fan, you won't be disappointed.
This is a great series! It is fun and keeps you interested! Along the lines of the BDB and Darkhunters in that you want to know what happens next with everyone. Really glad that the series is about the main 2 (Bones and Cat) but also blends in the others - 2 of which have there own stories now also! Can't wait for the next! Very fast read.

Half-Vampire Catherine Crawfield hunts vampires, hoping to eventually kill her father, the vamp who raped her mother. Then she is captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter. Soon Cat and Bones agree to train and work together hunting vampires.
This is the first book in the Night Huntress series. The spine of the book says Paranormal Romance, but it is definitely Urban Fantasy. Cat and Bones are a great couple and I definitely bought into their romance. The story is entertaining and fast paced. I would have preferred a different ending, but Jeaniene Frost sets up the next book in the series in an interesting way. My rating: 5 Stars.

Excellent book. I really enjoyed the play between Cat and Bones. She's gutsy and isn't afraid to push back when Bones gets rough. I liked it so well I got the rest of the series up to present. Would recommend it to anyone who likes vampires.
For anyone that enjoys the "paranormal romance" genre, this is a fun read. I'm currently reading the third book in this series, and I've been interested the entire way. Worth your time.

I had my ups and downs with this book. It stared out good, dragged in the middle then had a good finish. Catherine is only half vampire but she is all woman. I enjoyed they way Catherine and Bones interacted.

I've read three of this series. And the first is still my least favorite. I like books with an edge, which this certainly had. But the schmaltzy romance almost kept me from continuing. I'm all for the main character getting together with that someone special, but vampires and half-vampires shouldn't be so sickly sweet about it. I will continue to read the series because I like the premise and I like the characters. Just not a fan of the first book.
The first couple chapters were a little slow for me, but after that I couldn't put it down. Now I have to wait for the other 2 to get here.
This was a bit of a twist for me. I had read about this character in a latter installment of the series, and when reading her actual beginnings, it didn't even seem the same to me. Once I got past the difference though, I did find I liked her as she was portrayed in her own book, rather then as she is as a side character. Definitely recommend it.
This was an awesome book. I cant wait to read the next one.

I really liked this book. The romance between Cat and Bones was great. There were moments when I had no choice but to laugh out loud. The fight scenes were great also.
The only thing that could have possibly made this book any better, is if more of the love scenes had been described.

Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost. Published by Avon Books. This is the first in the Night Huntress Series. **Possible Spoiler Alert!! The main characters are: Catherine Crawfield (Cat) and Bones (Crispin). Cat is half vamp and half human. She became a vampire killer because of her mom. Her mom was raped by a vamp and that is how Cat became half vamp and half human. While out on a hunt she runs into Bones. He also is a vampire killer despite the fact that he himself is a vamp. He is out to get Hennessey a master vampire who is killeing young girls. What Bones is trying to find out is who he works for. When Cat and Bones meet he knocks the crap out of her. Being that she is a vamp she heals quick. He brings her to his place and chains her up thinking she is working with Hennessey. After much banter back and forth he figures out she isn't working for him and decides to make a deal with her. He trains her and gives her some of his blood to make her stronger and her senses better. The story proceeds with what they go through tracking these dirty vamps and how thier relationship starts to blossom. It was well written and kept my interest all the way to the end. It does end with questions that I assume will be answered in the second book. I thought the characters were well described and both had strong personalities. The different fight scenes were good in details and the romantic scenes were not overly erotic. Overall I would recommend this book and will start the second in the series right away.

Meet Cat, the half-vampire wonder. She is human, with vampire traits, and she came about from the union of a young vampire, and a human.
Meet Bones, vampire hitman, and the bane of Cat's existence... until she realizes that not all vampires are bad.
I first read this book back in 2008, and I fell in love with the series. Cat is smart-mouthed, violent, brave, courageous, and wonderful. Her undead lover Bones is, at least in my head, kind of like Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, meets Angel.
When Cat and Bones first meet, they hate each other. Bones gets Cat to join forces with him as he goes about hunting vampires. It's perfect, since she can act as bait since the vampires he hunts are interested in young, attractive women. Cat still thinks of Bones as an evil vampire, but agrees to go along with his plan since she really doesn't have a choice.
But as they spend time together, Cat comes to some scary realizations. But when Bones and Cat get close to the vampire they're chasing, their lives will be torn apart. Will Cat and Bones be able to make it through the tough times that they will face?
If you haven't read this series yet, and you're a vampire fan, you definitely need to! Jeaniene Frost is a wonderful writer who will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the whole book! The sex is hot, the plots are wonderful, and she just has a way of making you really care for her characters. Go grab a copy of this, and dig in!

I Love this series. The characters are all excellent and the action is fast paced and the romance between Cat & Bones is worth the Read! This was a fun fresh take on the vampire story. Bones and Cat end up making a good duo for many more vampire killings and situations that may arise.
I can read this entire series over and over. It's witty, charming, and completely sexy. Lots of action and snarky one liners. Definitely recommend to everyone! Even my 30 year old husband likes them!
