Haile Selassie is a vague name from the past; I chose this book to put information together with a name. I knew little other than he was a ruler of Ethiopia. But, surprisingly, Selassie was the son of a governor of an Ethiopian region.

I'd also heard the term 'Rastafarians' but didn't know what it referenced. When Haile Selassie was crowned ruler of Ethiopia in 1930, Jamaican activist Leonard Howell started a movement named after Selassie's former title of 'Ras Tafari." This group viewed Selassie as an African messianic figure. However, Selassie, a devout Christian Orthodox believer, tried to dissuade the group from their beliefs.

In 1895, Italy invaded Ethiopia to colonize the country. Ethiopia was the first country to defeat a European power after the war between Italy and Ethiopia. It took much maneuvering to get to the role of emperor, but Selassie succeeded in 1930. The whole story is fascinating. Selassie's death was a surprise. However, I was disappointed that the story just stopped at Selassie's death. I would have liked to have known what the country did after the last emperor of Ethiopia (Haile Selassie). I came away from this ebook with a better understanding of the country and Haile Selassie.
