Very different Kinsey Milhone book, in that she travels to Los Angeles and doesn't have her usual support networks. I liked it.

It started with the murder of Kinsey Millhone's sometime drinking buddy, an insurance claims adjuster. But before long Kinsey stumbles onto a massive insurance scam. Going undercover as a wisecracking vamp, Millhone descends into the Los Angeles nether world of machismo and gang hideouts. Her companion, terrified at having crossed the violent crook Raymond Maldonado, is Bibianna Diaz -- no Girl Scout herself.
As the Los Angeles Times notes, this book confirms yet again that Kinsey Millhone is "a wonderful character, tough but not brutish, resourceful and sensitive, a fit knight to walk those mean streets with her male predecessors."

Very interesting and different from the earlier books in the Kinsey Millhone series.
This is the first of the "alphabet" books I've read by this author. It is well writen and captures your attention quickly. It's a good "who done it" and the ending is quite suprising.

This was a great addition to Sue Grafton's ABC series -I love Kinsey
This is #8 in Sue Grafton's mystery series starring Kinsey Millhone, private investigator. Since the author is nearing the end of the alphabet with this series, you know they HAVE to be good.
Kinsey wants to get information from Bibianna; she also wants to protect her . . .
Bibianna Diaz was afraid for her life. If there was one thing she knew for sure, it was that you didn't cross Raymond Maldonado and live to tell the tale. And Bibianna had well and truly crossed him, running out on his crazy wedding plans and going into hiding in Santa Teresa light years away from the Los Angeles barrio that was home turf to Raymond and his gang. Now she needed money to buy time, to make sure she'd put enough space between them. And the quickest way she knew to get money was to work an insurance scam -- just like the ones Raymond was running down in L.A. The trouble was, Bibianna picked California Fidelity as her mark. And it wasn't long before her name surfaced in one of Parnell Perkins's open files and Kinsey was on her case. But so, too, was her spurned suitor, Raymond Maldonado.

Kinsey is in top form working undercover for the PD after a coworker at the insurance company is brutally murdered. Is the insurance fraud case she's pursuing connected? Kinsey as "Hannah Moore" becomes part of a "gang" working swoop and smash car accident setups that includes even doctors and lawyers. And how is Jimmy Tate, an old childhood friend, involved?
This story gives an inside look at an LA crime gang with a main character suffering from Tourette's Syndrome which was an interesting twist. I enjoyed reading this after being away from the series for several years. Will have to read the end of the alphabet now!

Sue Grafton continues to keep the reader entertained in her alphabet series with H IS FOR HOMICIDE. Her unique writing style is more like someone telling his/her favorite story and you only have to sit back and enjoy the tale.
In this book Kinsey Millhone is hired to investigate the death of a claims adjuster and uncovers an insurance scam in the process. The trail leads into Los Angeles on her pursuit of a violent individual who may be the murderer. Kinsey is not afraid of following the suspect through the seedier side of LA and even into a bar adequately named "The Meat Locker" (gee, can you guess what kind of bar this is?). This is the fearless Kinsey Malone that we see in this saga.
Yes, this is the insurance world's underground and Sue Grafton leads us through it with humor and a very biased opinion. Who else could come up with a singles bar named "The Meat Locker" and get away with the reader chuckling about it? Her books show her very funny sense of humor and nothing is immune to her wit.
In H IS FOR HOMICIDE, Grafton shows us that no one is protected from corruption and does this in such a way that not only do we find it funny but disgusting at the same time. As always, her characters are, well for lack of a better description, characters. They continuously encompass a wide variety of people from every walk of life that is one of the reasons people can submerse themselves into Grafton's books.
Her continuing books revolving around Kinsey Millhone are interesting reading and not the type of books that are a cerebral exercise, but more of a story being told by a master storyteller. They are definitely books to be enjoyed.

Another great book
Another Kinsey Millhone book. She is a private detective. In this book she is infiltrates a gang that is staging wrecks for the insurance money. It's not one of my favorite books of this series but it's still worth reading.
Eighth in the series, okay to start here. Nice step back in time to the 80s! This one zipped right along for me, although in truth it's mostly Kinsey waiting her chance to make a break for it. I read some other reviews of this complaining that the undercover thing was out of character for Kinsey, but I remember the last 7 pretty well and I disagree. Kinsey doesn't take huge risks with her life, but she's always up for a little B&E, couple fibs here and there, and just generally doing what she needs to do in order to get the dirt. An impulsive decision at a crucial moment and there she is, stuck with the murderers. Loved the twist at the end.
"Kinsey Millhone remains as engaging as ever." - The New York Times Book Review A very funny book as KM deals with insurance fraud investigation and finds out how to crash cars on purpose.

In H is for Homicide, Kinsey's is facing duo danger. While investigating a case of insurance fraud for California Fidelity, she discovers that the insurance case is undoubtedly linked to the murder of one of her own friends who worked for the insurance company.
Crossing paths with a Chicano street hustler, Diaz, Kinsey goes on one wild ride after another from Boyle Heights to the seediest and most dangerous neighborhoods in the City of Angels, including a raunchy bar that goes by the moniker of The Meat Locker. The book offers a stomach churning insight into the low life and high profits of auto insurance fraud and is as gritty as any of the Grafton books have dared to dwell.

Intelligent, fast-paced and filled with memorable characters.
Good read as are all of Grafton's books that I have read
Love this series! Some paperbacks have different covers than the cover shown.
Enjoyable series. Light read.
His name was Parnell Perkins, he was a claims adjustor for California Fidelity. He was killed shortly after midnight, shot at close range and left for dead in the parking lot outside of his office. To the cops it looked like a robbery. To Kinsey Millhone, it looked like he'd been murdered. Kinsey goes undercover and ventures into low-life crime. It may be her most complicated and risk-filled case.
Sue Grafton's alphabet books are the best! Love reading them all.
Another enjloyable book in the alphabet series.. I like these books, different story lines and quick easy reading.

Kinsey Millhone should have done something else -- she should have turned the car in the direction of home. Instead, she was about to put herself in the gravest jeopardy of her career.
Tom Newquist had been a detective in the Nota Lake sheriff's office -- a tough, honest cop respected by everyone. When he died suddenly, the townsfolk were saddened but not surprised: Just shy of sixty-five, Newquist worked too hard, smoked too much, and exercised too little. That plus an appetite for junk food made him a poster boy for an American Heart Association campaign.
Newquist's widow didn't doubt the coroner's report. But what Selma couldn't accept was not knowing what had so bothered Tom in the last six weeks of his life. What was it that had made him prowl restlessly at night, that had him brooding constantly? Selma Newquist wanted closure, and the only way she'd get it was if she found out what it was that had so bedeviled her husband.
Kinsey should have dumped the case. It was vague and hopeless, like looking for a needle in a haystack. Instead, she set up shop in Nota Lake, where she found that looking for a needle in a haystack can draw blood. Very likely, her own.
"N" Is for Noose: a novel in which Kinsey Millhone becomes the target and an entire town seems in for the kill.

A violent end to Parnell Perkins...Kinsey is determined not to get involved in the homicide, even if they had been drinking buddies and he seemed like a truly nice guy. After all, his case is unrelated to Kinseys current one, the suspiscious claims filed by one Bibianna Diaz. If Kinsey can crack the Diaz case...maybe she can keep her job?
The 8th book in the Kinsey Millhone series - Grafton never loses her touch. From the book cover: "The story begins with the violent end of Parnell Perkins, a claims adjuster for a CA based insurance company. The mystery takes her into the Los Angeles barrio in pursuit of the murderer, into jails, hospitals and a grunger bar named the Meat Locker. There are moments when the tension becomes to unbearable that you are tempted to skip paragraphs out of self-preservation."
