Lambin is my favorite of all the Nelson era naval authors . He may not be quite as literary as the O'Brian Aubrey series but his main character, Alan Lewrie, it as likable as any character in fiction that you will meet. The books have adventure, humor and good character developement. True Alan Lewrie's character may not meet many peoples standards. He will never win as husband or father of the year but as a Sea captain and a scamp he wins hand's down. This is one of the first books in the series and just is a sign of the books yet to come. A great series of books you don't want to miss if you like the sea adventure novels.

This book is part of an excellent series of books written by Dewey Lambdin. The central character is Alan Lewrie. The series takes him through his career as a british naval officer in the Nelson era of ships. The character is a likable scamp. The books are crammed with detail on sailing ships as well as historical facts about the poltical and social customs of the world 200 years ago. The combination is a remarkable read that transports the reader into a world filled with adventure and duty, nicely balanced with a bit of humor as well.
