I read The Grimrose Path solely because the characters from the first Trickster book were so interesting. The plot is good, the characters are compelling but, sadly, the writing style irritates me so much that I can't read another book in this series. I'm afraid they'll all have the same stylistic speed bump. Never once has this author explained something without repeating herself three to five times - sometimes in the same paragraph! She'll write about characters being close friends, so close they're like X, they're so close they're like Y, tight as XX, never to be parted like XY (by this point, I was ready to yell, I GET IT, THEY'RE FRIENDS!). Then what happens the next chapter? She tells us they're close friends. Three chapters later? She reminds us that they're close friends.

Is she writing for people with short-term memory loss?

It's very frustrating as I like her world-building, characters and the story is hopping but I just can't bear the repetitive nature of the narrative.

Oh well, not every book is for every one. I'll stick with Jim Butcher, Patricia Briggs, and Kevin Hearne. :(

I liked this one better than Trick of the Light. The characters were more fleshed out. Ishial, Robin Goodfellows angle mate from the Leandros Brothers series came to Las Vegas to help Trixa, Leo and the boys. It's fun when characters from other series pop up.

Some of Trixa's first person dialogue is a little too much and I found myself skimming to find the meat.

The car trip to Los Angeles and the final showdown at the end had more of the humor and pizzazz I loved in the Leandros books. Great stuff.

I especially liked the very end of this book.

Rob Thurman is an excellent author. Really she is. If you are reading this review you have probably read the first trickster book and know how good she can be. If you want to see more examples of her at her best you should go and read her Cal and Niko books. What you should not do is read this book.

Here's a little run down. The bad guy from the Percy Jackson books wants to kill a boat load of demons so that he can kill Satan and take over all universes. There are numerous references to the Cal and Niko books, so if you haven't read them you will be frequently confused. The frequent references to the penis of a character not appearing in the book are an example of this. The Norse gods are around, but the Greek gods are pretty much all dead.

Thurman has obviously conceived of a vast and intricate universe, but she doesn't really show this universe to her readers. Instead we are shown the antics of an ex angel and an ex demon. They aren't even entertaining antics.

I gave this 1/2 of a star. I have read worse books and given them higher ratings, but really this was such a badly written pain to read that the disappointment dropped the rating down by an entire star. If you have never read her work before, then don't start with this book.
