A really good read with lots of twists and turns in it. Can't be disappointed with a Zane Grey book!

The Great Trek is the full version, as Zane Grey meant it to be told, of a book released as The Wilderness Trek. It tells the story of two 19th century American cowboys who travel to Australia, one step ahead of the law, and join a great cattle drive across the immense Australian wilderness.

If you are a Zane Grey fan, then you will enjoy The Great Trek (488 pages), if you just like more modern Westerns, then you should probably read The Wilderness Trek (263 pages), which is much shorter. I've read both and enjoyed them.

I enjoyed the longer version as much for Grey's story as I did because my mother is Australian and I went through the 5th grade in that country. As a result, I knew as much as Australian history as I did my own country's.

Sometimes Grey's narrative is wearing and it helps to understand that his stories were written a hundred years ago. But his stories are good, which is why they are still in print and over 100 movies were made from his tales.

This is classic Zane Gery. This book gives a great impression of what it could have been like to drove a mob of cattle across Australia. The descriptions alone, but not surprising for ZG, are nothing less than mind-bending. I love all ZG books, but found this to be a real page burner.
