I'd say it was for 9 to 12 year olds (I'm giving it to a well-read 2nd grader), there is no translator, McCall Smith writes in English. The pictures are neat, but this adult finds the story boring. Maybe the younger crowd will be on the edge of their seats. Oh, yes, this is her first mystery, I don't know why they say #3.
