It's a first novel, and the rough edges do show a bit. The characters are competent, engaging, and heroic, but the author gives them a little too much free rein to run around in whatever direction they like, which makes the overall arc a little bumpy. There's a lot of interesting stuff in the book, it just isn't stitched together as well as a more practiced writer might have done.

This book was a real page turner. An exciting read with a likeable female main character. However, a bit of a warning here: if male/male attraction is offensive to you, then you probably won't like it. It wasn't a primary theme in the book and there was nothing graphic, but it was definitely implied. Otherwise, it was a nice, light adventure with some original ideas.

Is it just me? I swear I didn't see anything on the cover indicating one of a series but this jumps in to a storyline with a significant amount of back history. You can still keep up but it feels more like the second volume of a three book series.

The characters are interesting, the plotlines are a bit jumbled, and the frentic pace of action seems unbelievable. There's something missing by not providing either the viewpoint of the villans or the sense of a mystery to be revealed.
