Sorry I can't agree with the others on this book. I found it dragged almost into the middle. Then, it piqued my interest for a while, only to spoil it all with a very contrived and almost silly ending.
Irene is a tough woman reporter. maybe a bit too tough for her own good. She finds herself embroiled in a terrible mess when her very good friend and mentor, O'Connor, is murdered. The elderly man has been her surrogate dad for many years. She's determined to find his killer, although right from the start her life is threatened. At about this point the book gets exciting, with many killings, almost killings, and one huge mystery to be solved. Then comes the somewhat amateurish ending along with the wrap-up to it all. it reminds me of all those cozies out there, as well as a few of the "detective" shows on TV in the past. You know the ones I mean, Perry Mason, Murder She Wrote, etc. But they were more entertaining. The writer is good, but the book wasn't great.

Another good one in the Irene Kelly series. If you like a slow story, with lots of detail and clue hunting then you would like these books.

I love all of the Irene Kelly novels. The author has a great way of keeping the readers on the edge of their seat without making it to far-fetched. It was a really good book!

From Publishers Weekly: "Set in the fictional Southern California town of Las Piernas, this generally exciting debut mystery--the first of a projected series--brims with brutality, but is slowed at times by home and hospital bedside scenes. Former reporter Irene Kelly, now working in public relations, is shocked when her friend O'Connor is killed by a bomb hidden in a package. The only clue Irene can unearth is O'Connor's obsession with a long-unsolved crime involving an unidentified female body discovered in Las Piernas years before. Rehired by the Las Piernas Express , Irene teams up with ex-lover and homicide cop Frank Harriman to crack the case, but details of what O'Connor had learned about the killing are long in coming. Burke punctuates her too leisurely exposition with graphic, effective scenes of murder and attempted murder, although she depicts the menacing assassins more as machines than as human beings and provides a plausible explanation for all the violence only at her story's very end. Still, she writes with remarkable sensitivity about the physical and spiritual reactions of people terrorized by cold-blooded killers, and her gift for characterization somewhat compensates for her still-rudimentary pacing skills." Irene's best friend retired crime reporter O'Connor is dead -- murdered at his own front door... and all because of an unsolved, three-decades-old murder the blustery, big-hearted newspaperman wouldn't let rest in peace. Irene Kelly gave up journalism for public relations, but now the sudden, brutal death of her mentor is pulling her back to the news desk. But the search for O'Connor's killer may prove fatal for the intrepid reborn reporter. Because a savagely murdered "Jane Doe" corpse from thirty years ago is pointing the way into a lethal maze of blood and politics. And in the blink of any eye it could be "Goodnight, Irene"... forever.

The characters are well defined, the plot is solid, thought out and doesn't fall apart at the end. Everything fits and you won't be disappointed in the final scene.
