I don't think I've read a more touching animal book - and one that was as funny. I've never had a pet pig before, and I don't know if I ever will, but I grew to love Mr. Christopher Hogwood and all the various slops he was fed over the years. The author is truly an amazing woman, too. You'll admire her more with each page turned.

The Good Good Pig is a good good book. Sy Montgomery does for pigs what John Katz does for dogs. I only wish that this book had focused more on the pig - much of the time is spent describing how the pig is a catalyst for developing relationships between the author and other humans. Nevertheless, this is a touching story of an endearing animal.

I hesitated reading this, since it was an animal story but, Oh My Gosh ... what a GREAT book. Even if you don't enjoy animal stories, you've got to try this one, It was so good I talked it up to my young daughter and my 70 year old mom. Both enjoyed it, as well! It would make a great gift book, too!

If you love true memoirs in this type of animal genre you'll enjoy this book. Sy Montgomery is an excellent & intelligent writer. She writes in a very easy and flowing fashion. In spite of her noticeable intelligence she doesn't write in a haute style. I loved the fact that she used no foul language or cursing in this book. I was quickly drawn into this story and it held my interest right to the end. I found myself identifing with many of the author's experiences.
The author, Sy Montgomery was a somewhat eccentric nature lover who had always thought herself more animal than human. She was estranged from her parents and had few close friends. That was before the sweet Christopher Hogwood came into her life. When Sy and her husband Howard get Christopher they nurse him slowly back to health. He soon is getting into loads of trouble all over town. Thanks to some very understanding neighbors, Christopher Hogwood is soon the most popular member of the neighborhood. Of course when people hear about Christopher they want to meet him. Pretty soon Chris is a celebrity too. In turn, Sy is forced into human relationships. The surprise is that she finds that she's actually enjoying it. Christopher Hogwood ends up touching everyone's life that he comes in contact with, until the day he dies. It was like he was sent into Sy's life to reconcile all her human relationships. Christopher is truely a special pig.
The reason I gave this charming book only 4 stars? At times the author goes into a few personal musings about her extensive travels, beliefs about religions or about people who eat meat. Whether or not, you would agree with her opinions- it doesn't really add to this otherwise awesome story. Also, at times Ms. Montgomery 'name drops' a bit too much for my tastes.
Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes stories on human/animal relationships. I'd read this again. Very well written and touching story.

When author and naturalist Sy Montgomery adopted a "doomed to die" piglet from a local pig farm in Vermont, she had no idea what a change she would be making in the lives of herself and her husband, Howard.
At first the piglet, which they named Christopher Hogwood, looked like he wasn't going to make it. The runt of the litter, skinny and loaded with worms, Christopher was weak and sickly. But with a lot of love, and the benefit of hand feeding plus worm meds, slowly but surely Chris began to fill out and come to life with a BANG! The story of this pig's life as he grows to over 700 lbs. and becomes a much loved and well known character in their small Vermont community, as well as the star of a few TV documentaries etc, is entertaining and amusing. I like the author's writing. It's intelligent and very informative. I'd recommend this book to anyone as a great read.

A fantastic story for any animal lover of the balm of an animal's love to the troubles of the human soul. Christopher Hogwood was a good good pig and his simple joy in living brought joy to those around him. Fun and quick read for anyone with a big heart.

This is an ok read. Not my favorite animal story.

Delightful, wonderful, and amazing! Not a "cutesy" story: just the well-written humorous account of a gentleman who happens to be a pig. As a cat-lover, I was interested in the way that the author turned her pig's, well, piggishness, his innate hedonism and stubbornness into, not merely tolerated, but GOOD character traits and catered to them. Is this not how I feel about and what I do with my most independent cat? This book is a keeper for me. If you are an animal lover and have this book on your Wish List and no one ever posts it for you, it's worth buying from a store, IMHO.

Maybe it's just me, but I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as some of the other reviewers did. It read more like a day in the life of Sy Montgomery than it did about the life of her pig. It went on and on, page after page after page, of all her travels while writing her other books. To me it was more a memoir about the author, with a little bit thrown in about her pig. The quarter of the book that was actually about the pig was quite good though.

What a great book! Funny, heartwarming, educational, just overall feel-good book.
Christopher Hogwood was the runt of the litter, likely not to survive. But new owner Sy Montgomery wanted him to grow and be loved. And that he did. This book takes you through his journey through his 14 year life, sharing all of the trials and love he shared with family and neighbors. Almost made me want to get a pet pig!
If you're tired of local and national sad news, read this book to put a smile on your face.

A beautifully written memoir about a life shared with, and enriched by animals - Tess, the border collie, a cockatiel, the Ladies (hens), and most notably, a remarkable pig named Christopher Hogwood. A true delight to read!

This is a very entertaining book, especially if you are an animal lover. You will thoroughly enjoy the antics of Chris the pig, as well as the other animals.
The effect Chris has on those who are lucky enough to know him is touching and shows how much we can learn about ourselves if we just recognize we are part of nature, not its master.
