Crap-fest. They hate each other the entire time and treat each other with abuse and disrespect at every turn. He hits her and then basically rapes her but she loves to be touched by him (What!?) even though he never says a kind word to her the entire year they are married. Awesome. Not my idea of a romance. But hey.... if you're into that kind of thing.... (S&M) this is for you.

I really liked this book. It had everything to keep me from being able to put it down.History,betrayal,action,romance,more action,more betrayal,all for romance. Good read.

This was an old keeper of mine. Loved the book, got good feedback over the years when I lent it out. This was early Graham, before she tagged on her married name to her later books.
Olaf and Erin really have you on the edge of your seat.
This is my first novel by Heather Graham and although I had a hard time putting it down, I also had a hard time loving it.
I know things back then were probably that bad for women, but I had a hard time really liking a hero who slaps his wife around. Combine with the dominance games he played I had to wonder why Erin would ever fall for him. He had such a brilliant mind yet he was one of the biggest idiot in the world when it came to his wife.
Erin, who started out as a great character because of her strength and ingenuity, became so weak after her marriage to Olaf that I ceased to respect her. She turned from screeching harpie to docile to seductress to insecure and the list goes on. It was really as if she lost herself when she married. Not exactly befitting of someone who could lead men into battle. As for someone who held on to vengence for so long she was very quick to forgive her family for such a huge betrayal. The inconsistency to her character was very annoying.
But with all my complaints I still found the book worth finishing. In fact I rushed to finish it. Yes, some parts were tedious and dragged but it was interesting.
I'm not sure if I will continue to read the series or if I will pick up another one of her books. She is very wordy an takes her time but I'm not sure Grahmn spends that time wisely developing believeable characters or intriguing plotlines.

Enjoyed the book, but I always do. Historical information is always interesting.
