(Back cover) In 1934, during the midst of the Great Depression, millions of people were unemployed and homeless across the United States. During these hard times, it's no surprise that the country was overrun with dangerous bank robbers like John Dillinger. While the Depression had forced Hildy Corrigan's family to move to California in hopes of finding work and a home, she never imagined it would bring her face to face with a ruthless outlaw and his gang!

The adventure begins when Hildy Corrigan befriends a new girl named Dixie Mae, who confides to Hildy that her father is a notorious bank robber and has kidnapped her from her mother. Dixie Mae is afraid of her father, who plans to rob a nearby train carrying millions of dollars in gold.

Aided by her feisty tomboy cousin, Ruby Konning, and her friend Spud, the three friends risk their lives to help Dixie Mae escape her captor and to stop the train from being robbed.
