From the cover: When she was a girl, Lisa See spent summers in her family's antique store in Chinatown. There, her grandmother and great-aunt told her intriguing, colorful stories of her family's past.
As an adult, Lisa spent five years collecting her family's stories. The result is a vivid, sweeping family portrait that is at once particular and universal, telling the story not only of one family, but of the Chinese people in America.
I found this book both interesting and fascinating. I loved reading and learning about the Chinese culture.

I have been a huge fan of Lisa See's novels for many years and thought this book about her family's history would be very interesting. This book both fascinated and enlightened me about the difficulties that the Chinese faced in America and the difficulties some faced by staying behind in China. I think much of this history in this story has been lost over the years and I thought she was brave for bringing it to light. I am so glad this history has been preserved for future generations to read and that she included numerous family photos throughout the book. Highly recommend this book.
