Inimitable style, off-the-wall humor, good eye for how people really are - all these make-up the interesting books for both adults and children by now classic author Roald Dahl. This book is autobiographical, and both hilarious and heart-tugging.

OK, I'm biased because I am a total Dahl-aholic, so bear with me.

This is not the Dahl of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." This is the Dahl of the grown-up world. In this book, Dahl writes about his experiences flying for the RAF during WWII, including almost severing his nose off during a crash and various adventures in exotic locales.

As always, the writing is sensual without being dirty, descriptive without being overly wordy, and hilarious without being slapstick-y. Dahl's word choices always fascinate me, and his stories are so vivid that you feel like you're right there. Some adventures have a twist, a Dahl signature, and some don't.

If you're looking for a fantastic children's book, this isn't it. If you're looking for a fantastic adult book, look no further. "Going Solo" is an autobiography that reads like a novel.

Known more for fiction, Roald Dahl was a great writer period. This autobiographical account of his early adult years in East Africa and in the RAF in WWII is a quick read and an amazing story. Amazing that he survived. A real page-turner.
