I'm a big fan of Newport, RI. It is one of my favorite places in the US. I didn't like this book as much and that was a disappointment to me. Firstly, the author presumed a knowledge of Newport that many readers mightn't have and secondly, the premise of the novel was very contrived and not credible at all. This would be an OK beach brainless book but is not a substantial read at all I'm sorry to say

This is the first John Jakes book I read and am somewhat disappointed in it. Writing was just so-so. History of the area was interesting and some of the characters were interesting, but it was slow paced .
