This is a cute cozy with a spunky new character, Suzanne Hart (owner of Donut Hearts). I found myself really rooting for her as she tries to solve the mystery of who dumped a body in front of her donut shop, despite all the warnings for her not to do so.
I do wish that the author had gone a little further with her new love interest, as it would have added a little something to this story, but from the looks of it (from the excerpt), she'll be developing that relationship more in her next book (Fatally Frosted).

I did have an idea of who the murderer was by about the fourth chapter, but I enjoyed seeing how the story played out. I loved the antics of Suzanne's best friend Grace!

Warning: Don't read this book on an empty stomach... you'll be on your way to the nearest donut shop in a hurry! :)
(The recipes in it look really yummy too! I may have to copy them and try making a few!)

I was excited to start this book, I love cozies and thought it had a great premise. I barely made it through the first chapter, too many loose ends already. First snag for me, she is experimenting with pumpkin donuts, she serves them to her first customer/friend/retired police officer and makes a point of saying that if he comments on them she'll know if she has them right, well...........nada, nothing else about them. Second snag, the "large" bank deposit, comments on how it was a "bigger" day/deposit than others, almost leaves it behind at the second hand shop she visits on the way to the bank, goes back to the donut shop to talk "privately" about nothing......and the deposit? I gave up on it. I guess I like a little more follow through on the small details. I am usually easily amused so I really hated to give up on this book. Maybe the next book will be better.

UGH!

If Jessica Beck isn't another pseudonym for Tim Myers, then they're sharing a brain! Cozy mystery. Small town in North Carolina. Hysterical female who reacts all out-of-proportion. Goofy explanation that defies reality.

I read a lot of cozies, and some of them are really great. This wasn't one of them.

The heroine states on page 33:

"This mess wasn't going to just go away, no matter how much I hoped it would. I was going to have to do something myself about my friend's murder, or keep looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life ..."

Mind you, this is LESS THAN 10 HOURS after the murder!! She then proceeds to point out, ad nauseum, how SHE has to solve the crime, and then complain about how the police weren't sharing their information with her ...

Her friends all assume she'll "investigate" the murder ... why?

She asks her friends to help, and then tells them they can't because they'll be at risk?

No. I'm glad I'm on a diet ... I know I won't be missing anything when I skip the rest of this series!

This book was terrible! I read TONS of cozy mysteries and this is the ONLY one I have ever read that I couldn't finish. I kept trying and trying, hoping it would get better. Nope. The story is all over the place, the writing is terribly choppy and the main character is completely unlikable. Actually, I couldn't stand any of the characters. I just removed all the other books in the series from my wish list. Skip this one folks! I honestly don't even know how this book got published.
