the glad season BOYHOOD IN THE CARIBOU OF BRITISH COLUMBIA Author:Paula Elizabeth Sitts The clean smell of fields and woodlands, the ways of animals, the life of the ranchers, trappers and Indians and the excitement of challenging the wilderness are all in this account of one boy's life in this untamed country. — It took a lot of courage for Cora Thurston to decide to pull up stakes in Seattle and head for the remote and unsettled C... more »aribou country of British Columbia with her orphaned 12-year-old grandson, Davey. They camped by a lake for the summer, and then made the final decision to try living year-round in this almost untamed land.
Their first winter was spent in a hastily-constructed log cabin, and they survived the experience surprisingly well, needing only a little help from neighbors, one of whom even gave Davey a horse to ride to school (he'd never have made it through the snow without the knowledgeable Chessie.) Davey also made friends with an Indian boy and his family, who taught him about the woods and mountains and the animals that lives there: rabbits, foxes, moose, and even wild horses, which still freely roamed the almost unfenced range. Cora did her best to ease the pain of the loss of Davey's parents, and to make her small income stretch to cover their simple needs. As the years went by, Davey learned to hunt and fish, to find the honey trees, to rope the wild cay-uses, to run a trap line and to ride so well that, at fifteen, he could take a summer job as a cowboy.
When he was sixteen, Davey had grown to love their simple outdoor life so much he couldn't face the idea of going back to the city to finish his schooling. How a lonely half-breed trapper helped him change his mind makes a surprising ending to this unusual and delightful account of life in a beautiful and little=known part of the Canadian wilderness.« less
