A thorough account of one of the least talked about stories of WWII. A great tribute to some of the forgotten heroes of WWII.

I got this book because I wanted to learn more about Wake Island and the part it played in the war. This book does exactly that. It places the reader in the midst of the actual battles that the men fought so hard to try to keep Wake Island out of the hands of the Japanese. It tells of the civilians that fought side by side with the Marines and the Naval men stationed there. Sloan has certainly done his homework in researching the facts and in interviewing survivors with their eye-witness accounts. These men were dangerously outnumbered by the invasion of the Japanese, yet their determination, ingenuity, and just raw guts in their brave attempts to stand in the midst of insurmountable odds is amazing; and the spirit of their endurance in becoming POW's after the surrender of Wake will definitely make any American proud.
