I enjoyed this book; it's not quite the normal Stephen King book where you have to keep the lights on for the next five years, but it is a good psychological thriller about a little girl lost in the wilderness and her using her baseball hero as a fantasy bodyguard to help find her way out.

considering my 2 favorite hobbies are hiking in maine and new hampshire, and rooting for the boston red sox, how could i not love this book? though i am glad that i read it in the comfort of my living room - not a book i recommend as trail reading!

I really enjoyed my first Stephen King book. The main character, Trisha appealed to me for a few reasons. She is smart, resilient and exceptionally mature for her age and King render her believable: she makes critical mistakes and she at times unravels. Not all nine-year-olds could have survived, but King convinced me Trisha could.
Im not a baseball fan but I truly could relate to why it mattered to Trisha, and I was glad she was the fan she was because the principles of the game, and the combination of her fantasy interactions with Gordon as well as the traits he embodied for her: patience, stillness and clarity of mind, carried her through, and I desperately wanted her to make it through.
I really liked how King developed and used the beast. I was never quite sure if it was real or supernatural or both. And their eventual confrontation is the perfect climax. It is surreal. I literally felt as if I were watching it in slow motion, in a dream-like sequence.
The fact that this book isn't like Kings typical work is likely what appeals to me. I've never read him because while I have enjoyed a few of the movies, Ive never enjoyed them enough to want to experience them in book form. This book had just enough suspense for me, stellar writing and good pacing. For me this is pitch perfect. I'm considering reading more by Stephen King

I wasn't sure if I'd like this, honestly. It just didn't appeal to me as much as most of his other stuff does when I hear about it. I'm glad I finally got around to reading it though, it's a really good story. I certainly wouldn't call it horror, more like thriller lite.

This book was so enjoyable, first King novel i've read in a long time..pulled me in for the ride from first page and took me away until the very last page.This is King at one of his most creative moments in my opinion,definately not as "out there" as most of his novels. Just good old fashioned panic at the thought of ,what it would feel like to be in this situation..a must read.

This is a short book. This book was nothing in the way of a horror; there wasn't any scary twists or turns. It's just the journey of a little girl and her mind. Defiantly not the unusual when it comes to my fav. Stephen King. Sad to say but it was a bit of a let down. When you hear Stephen King you think bloodcurdling, chilling, creepy, hair-raising, horrendous, horrifying, intimidating, shocking, spine-chilling, spooky, unnerving frightening, terrifying. THINK THAT SUM IT UP? All in all it was a good book just not the expected horror affiliated with the name.

This is the first and only King novel I have successfully completed. It is shorter than a majority of his books. It was also geared towards a young adult crowd. It's a really good story, and it's worth reading, even if you're a die hard King fan. I bought the pop-up book for the novel as well, and still find it to be enjoyable.

I'm not a huge Stephen King fan - not crazy about scary books - so I almost didn't read this one. I'm not even sure how it got on my bookshelf. But when I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. It's a story of survival - a little girl lost in the woods for days with only a walkman, a tuna sandwich, some chips, a bottle of water, and an amazing imagination. When her physical strength is all but gone, her imagination takes over, providing her hero, Red Sox pitcher, Tom Gordon, as an escort to safety. That is, until the "God of the Lost," who has stalked her throughout her dangerous journey, steps out of the woods to claim her.

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King is a real thriller, a pageturner. A girl of only 9 years old went walking with her mother and her brother in an enormous great wood. The young girl had to pee and so she lost her brother and her mother. In her panic to get back to her family, she takes a turning that leads deeper into the wood: she gets lost... She had no food or drinks with her. It takes her 5 days to find the inhabitable world.

At ten thirty she was lost in the woods. By eleven she was trying no to be terrified, trying not to let herself think, This is serious, this is very serious. Trying not to think that sometimes when people got lost in the woods, they got seriously hurt. Sometimes they died.
This is my least favorite Stephen King book. I thought it was fairly boring and slow.

Sometimes it is nice to come across a short book that is well written and won't take to long to read. Well, this is one of those. The book is fast paced and well told and let my imagination go. I felt for the character and could make a movie in my head. That is what a well written book can do.
I am not too interested in mysteries, but a friend recomended this book. I wasn't very impressed. Probably will not read other Stephen King books.

This will play on all of your fears of losing your children, but in this story there is a strong level of faith and resilience that helps you to not lose heart. A great read for King fans, or for fans of just good books...

I can't say too much because I don't want to give it away but if you like King or Suspense/Horror novels without to much gore and violence READ THIS. This was one of those books that once I started reading, I didn't want to stop. I could hardly wait to find out how it ended yet didn't want it to end. Stephen King did a fantastic job of making you wonder "what could possibly happen next". You had to really admire the incredible resourcefulness of Trisha McFarland (the little girl who is the main character).
I would definitely recommend this book especially to those who enjoy Stephen King novels.

I am not a baseball fan but my BFF is a HUGE baseball fan so I read this book with her love of the game in the back of my mind. The story is a bit slow, as is the game of base ball. The basics of the story is a young girl goes on a day trip with her mom and brother into the mountains for a hike. Her family is torn by recent separation/divorce and older brother attitudes. Due to family dynamics she somehow becomes lost in the woods. She is not alone, (of course not, this is a Stephen King Book, right?). She is followed, she has her companion, as well as others. Not only is the slowness of the story due to the way the game is played, I believe it is also due to the way it would feel to be lost in the woods, days wondering alone with your thoughts and fears, nights even longer as your fears claw at the edges trying to take over your resolve. How is it that she stays alive far longer than most adults would be able to? Was it her "god", was she in an alternative dimension (a fact we discussed in book club, brought up by friends who are into sci fi more then I am). Even though this was a "slow" book, it was by no means boring. It felt slow while reading but I actually finished it quickly, it was really strange, almost like being lost in the woods. Stephen King is brilliant, I love him, of course.

Nine year old girl wanders away from family on a hike of the Appalachian Trail in the NE and gets lost. "Tom Gordon" is a pitcher with the Red Sox that she pulls for as she listens to the radio to help maintain her sanity. In typical King style, an unspeakable terror menaces the little girl.
I listened to this book on audio (read by Anne Heche) a few years and found it terribly boring yet I've seen reviews where people list it as one of King's best works to date. This one is a hardcover that I registered at bookcrossing.com so it has bookcrossing labels inside.
