A shining example of Block's earlier work, set in the first person as he most often does. Never mind the fact that with today's science and security, it couldn't happen. The 60's must have been fun.
A Lawrence Block fan Will not be disappointed in this hard-boiled mystery.
Johnny Hayden and his partner had the perfect scam-offer a guy a fraction of what he paid for a piece of worthless Canadian land and make it seem like it's only part of a much bigger parcel being assembled. Then get the mark curious, so curious he'll pay a fortune to own the whole thing. Tricky...the other prize is Evvie, the girl with the long green heart.
Johnny and Doug had a scheme to take real estate entrepreneur Wallace Gunderman for all he was worth. But they needed a girl on the inside to make it work. Enter Evelyn Stone, Gunderman's secretary and lover. Gunderman promised to marry her, but never came through. Now she's ready to make him pay. A great, old-style 1960s crime novel, a great read. You don't find them like this anymore.
A Hard Case Crime book about grifting, but who took who?
A hard-boiled, noir nightmare. By the reigning master of gritty crime.
This is the second book by Lawrence Block that I've read. very good book!!!! Loved the ending.
By the cteator of Matt Scudder.
From the Hard Case Crime series, a novel about some con artists. But it turns out that a book about selling phony real estate is about as interesting as one about selling the real thing... they make phone calls, they type letters, they check into hotels. The dialog does not crackle, the suspense does not build. Interesting only to see how much has changed has since 1965.
THE GIRL WITH THE LONG GREEN HEART by Lawrence Block: Never, ever, ever promise a female employee you are going to marry her unless you really intend to. Real estate entrepreneur Wallace Gunderman of Olean, New York will tell you that this is a lesson he learned the hard way in this Lawrence Block thriller, Hardcase Crime Number 14. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, particularly a good looking one like Evelyn Stone, Gundermans secretary, lover, and worst enemy. With her help Johnny Hayden and Doug Rance are going for the gold, and they arent in the Olympics either. Another great Lawrence Block tale..
Good caper book from the reknown Lawrence Block
