I listened to the story (unabridged Audio CD).
Gilda Joyce is a very 'quirky' teenager. She lives in Michigan with her mother and brother. Her father, who died two years before, had given Gilda his typewriter. Gilda uses the typewriter to help her in discovering her 'career'.
Gilda doesn't quite fit in with the other girls in her class. While each of them has plans for their summer vacation, Gilda invents a tale where she says she is going to spend the summer with relatives in California. So she won't be embarrassed, she writes a letter and gets herself invited to San Francisco to visit her mothers distant cousin Lester Splinter and his fragile (and frequently crabby) daughter Juliet.
Gilda arrives at the house in a posh San Francisco neighborhood. But the house has a neglected look and attached to the house is a boarded up tower which immediately sparks Gilda's interest. You see, Gilda has a very active imagination for she is reading a book about how to become a psychic investigator (The Masters Psychic Handbook by By Balthazar Frobenius, a Michigan native just like Gilda). So of course she has to find out what secret is in the tower. She talks Juliet into having a séance to try and contact her long dead aunt Melanie Splinter to discover what really happened in the tower. Juliet has seen the ghost of Melanie and the housekeeper, Rosa, has also seen many ghosts in the gardens near the tower.
It was a cute story. I am glad I had the opportunity to listen to it.
