Ben Carson is truly an inspiration. He overcame so much to become SO much. This should be required reading for all teens. Dr. Carson shares not only his life experiences, but much wisdom as well. My teenage son and I both enjoyed this book.

This is a remarkable story of a truly remarkable doctor who defied all the odds of growing up in the ghetto to become a world acclaimed neurosurgeon of children. Ben Carson gives hope to families that have lost hope that their child will survive; he gives us hope in what God can do with someone who is totally submitted to His Will. I highly recommend this book.

This book describes the life of Ben Carson a famous surgeon at John Hopkins Hospital. We learn about what his childhood was like. His family was poor and his neighborhood was not so great. He dealt with several setbacks but got through them. He loved to read and the library played a central role in his life! He has a lot of lessons to teach to young people about what you can do to achieve your dreams. His dream was not handed to him but it took hard work and determination.
I enjoyed this book about Dr. Carson's strive to become a doctor and some of his cases. However, the book seemed disjointed as if he just picked things here and there with the connections seeming forced. There's many mentions of how God and his church (Seventh Day Adventist) provided inspiration - something in which I think Christian readers will find their own inspiration. However, at times I think Dr. Carson comes across as rather arrogant. I personally didn't find this a great book, but I did enjoy the read.

I think this book is wonderful. It goes to show that sometimes what we think is impossible really can be done. And I admire his mom for doing the pushing when he needed it.

this is one of my favorite books ! i firmly believe it should be read by anyone . as an ex-homeschooler , bookseller and lover of books , this book , in a nutshell covers everything i believe in about the power of reading and the love of books . sure ,there are probably smarter books written about the how an why of reading , but THIS book offers an example . ben darson started reading , when his mother made him read ever so many books a week . it improved his schoolgrades and was the basis of him going on to higher education . in todays times , when everything is electronical and books seem to get out of vogue and be replaced by ebooks , ben carsons biography shows that a library card and verocious reading can , in the end , help the man . BUT !!! what most of all impressed me , and made me cry many times , was his honesty that showed through the whole book about his total dependency on G-d . ben carson gives glory to whom glory is due and because of his humility in acknowleding this fact ,this makes it a book worth reading .
An inspirational read for anyone.
This book sat on my shelf for a few years I can't beleive I ignored it all that time. What a compelling story & beautifully written. This book really inspired me to tell young people about Dr. Carson, & what he did with his life. Especially his Mother teaching him all the correct things. I especially agree with him that sports & music play too much of a role in kids. There are much more important things in life to get somewhere. First should be the respect of your parents, teachers, & elders. There is a whole world out there for one if they just work at it & know they can do it. Every young person should read his book.
