The Year is 1370. The main characters are the Duke of Lancaster's spy Owen Archer and Geoffrey Chaucer. This book takes place in Wales where the two have gone to recruit archers and inspect the Duke's fortifications. An unexpected death sets the two on a hunt for the killer.

This book is not quite as good as the previous ones as Archer's wife, Lucie, is left at home and her involvment in his cases adds an interesting twist which isn't present here. If you like Ellis Peters' books, you like this one.

This one was a bit confusing...too many names that were similar. Or maybe it was just me...I didnt get who half the people in the story were until I read the authors notes. Is he a monk or a bard or both?

owen archer takes his father in law sir robert,on pilgrimage to wales. where owen was born. his father in law is elderly and feeling ill, wants to make this trip before it's too late. owen is conflicted in his home land learns what has happened to his family.
of course he's goat roped into spying, meets some old friends, finds new ones.
this book has less of his wife and family than others. but you learn alot about other
characters in the series. if you are reading the books in order it's almost required
as you will find in the books to follow.
more 'meat on the bone' in this story than in some of the others.
and again you learn about the time in history from the grass roots point of view.

I have to agree with another reviewer, this was a confusing story. I think it was a combination of too many sub-plots and too many Welsh names. I sometimes had problems figuring out who was who and where they were. Several times, the author mentioned a person doing or saying something and my reaction was "When did he come back into the story."

Set in medieval England, it's a mystery. (Duh it's in the title.) Mysteries are my least favorite so I never really read it. It was a gift.
