The love-child of Gormenghast and The Black Company, fostered by the Book of the New Sun and The Hunger Games, with a little bit of Lord of Light... also, spaceships! Overall, it's a great quest/coming-of-age story, and I can't imagine what the sequel will be like. Highly recommended.

This is a weird review to write because even though I didn't understand everything that was happening in the book and there were also a bunch of characters with odd names that I half the time couldn't keep track of, I still loved every bit of it. The story itself (what I could follow) was so different and so intense. The main characters were great. Especially Gideon. Loved the words that came flying out of her mouth. Awesome ending to the book as well. Can't wait to read book 2.
