A riveting account of the devastating tsunami of 2011. Although I mistakenly bought this book thinking it was literally about ghosts, which it does touch briefly upon, it focuses mainly on an elementary school where most of the children died. It's intense and very sad, and brought about a new understanding of this tragedy and those who survived.

What's it like to survive a tsunami? I still have a difficult time grasping the magnitude of the destruction, it's so horrifying. Within the breadth of seconds, everything you know and love is simply washed away. My knowledge was limited to what I've seen on YouTube videos only, but this accounting covers a lesser known community. The fate of the students of Okawa Elementary School in Kamaya village and surrounding region is the central focus in this book along with the parents' search for answers and accountability. Especially helpful were the maps and diagrams, which I referred to constantly. What I read in Ghosts of the Tsunami had me searching out more information. A mind-boggling read at 4 stars.
