The first in a trilogy of Romney Marsh, England. Regency romance, but not in the city. Good, intriguing story line; weaves mystery, romance, and adventure very nicely.

Widower Chance Becket hires Julia Carruthers as a nanny for his 5-year-old daughter Alice and takes her back to his home and adoptive family in the coast of Romney Marsh - reluctantly, for he has spent years trying to forget his unsavory past, and only need brings him home. Once a ragged street urchin, he now has a prestigious place in society working for the War Office, and he has been tasked to look into the local smuggling operations on the coast. But his family appears to be involved, and in protecting them he must keep Julia from discovering his secrets, which becomes more difficult with the growing attraction between them.

This book opens the Beckets of Romney Marsh series, which I have been reading haphazardly, but have thoroughly enjoyed nonetheless. Interesting characters, the right touch of humor and adventure. I like this series.

This story takes place in the Regency Period, but the characters are not the aristocracy. They are ex-pirates in hiding in England from the Caribbean Islands. The heroine is the daughter of a vicar thrown in with the pirates when she answers an ad for a nanny for our hero's daughter. I haven't decided if this band of pirates is worthy of reading the series.
