Great book on 1st Reconnaissance Battalion of the U.S. Marine Corps during the initial phase of the Iraq invasion in 2003. Written from the notes of an embedded Rolling Stone Magazine reporter it pulls no punches in what went down, the good and the bad. The insanity, the confusion, the mistakes and the heroics of the men in 1st recon are all on display in the book. it is sometimes hilarious while at other times saddening. If you want to get an insight on what grunt work is like during wartime you need to read this book. Then, if you haven't already, you need to watch the HBO miniseries. Both will open your eyes to the difficulties faced by young men in the military during armed conflicts. And before you get all up in a roar about women being in the military and suffering hardships too this book is about the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion of the U.S. Marine Corps during the initial phase of the Iraq invasion in 2003 and didn't have women Marines assigned to the unit.
