This novel is about "the society of the street people in the New South" and their relationship to the middle class. Their stories are filled with violence and sex. I found this to be dark and fast-moving yet surprisingly at times humorous and even entertaining. Wonderful character development.

The author is a past Poet Laureate of North Carolina. He has written numerous books of poetry as well as six novels. THE GAUDY PLACE was awarded the Sir Walter Raleigh Prize.
