A favorite cookbook of mine. The recipes aren't difficult. If you live in a large metropolitan area with ethnic stores, you can find these ingredients easily. I love the little anecdotes and tidbits that Jeff Smith gives for each recipe. He has a very warm, folksy way of writing. You feel like he's talking to you. This is an unpretentious cookbook. My one complaint is the lack of photos. I love my cookbooks to have glossy photos. If you can get past the lack of photos for the recipes, you'll find this is a gem of a book.

This is a great cookbook for anyone who loves learning not only recipes but the history of food. SA few recipes are only included for their historical value, not to be attempted. But most are easily made by today's cooks, and all I've tried are delicious.

As in all of Jeff Smith's books, this contains much more than recipes. Worth having as a primary reference book on cooking Chinese, Greek, and Roman recipes.

Love the recipes for Greek and Roman cooking. I don't do Chinese dishes and so can't speak on them but knowing the Frug, they are excellent as well. There are enough to give a smattering in all types of recipes from appetizers to desserts and everything in between.
Excellent insight on good food from three ancient civilizations. Just fun to read and some good food as well.
