This earlier work of McMurtry's is far different than today's. Much of his current writing is silly (Cadillac Dan) or profound (Lonesome Dove).

I won't give a plot synopsis because it's been about 40 years since I read it. But it's one of those books that prompted me to memorize authors' names so I could read more of their work.

It's a moving, joyous, tragic story. I would re-read it.

Written in 1972, this McMurtry novel is a change of pace from his Western themes and features the problems of Danny Deck in dealing with approaching litery success and the attentions of three women, a girl friend, a neighbor and a girl pal.
