First published in 1978 when television was not the source of high quality information and entertainment it is now, in the PBS era, the author's four arguments against the medium (presented in 360 pages) are, basically, the shallowness of presentation, the constant advertising, the ill effect upon the viewer's health of constantly watching the flickering screen, and the inherent bias of opinion expressed by the paid talking heads whom the viewers allow into their living rooms. To make his point stronger, the author calls for elimination of TV; obviously, he does so in ignorance of two classic rules of life in the modern world: 1) all things in moderation; and 2) there is an off switch. If you are pro-TV, this book will help you understand the antis but will not suggest to you any means to improve TV. If you are anti-TV, this book will provide you with an outline of your opposition.
