Ooooh good book! The thief with magical abilities is pretty much a standard fantasy trope, but this one takes it up a few levels with wonderful world-building, fully realized characters, good dialogue, plus clear and accessible writing. It can't be easy to create a world with a complicated magic system and explain it without getting lectured, but Bennett does it flawlessly. Sancia, Gregor, Orso, Berenice...even the minor Scrapper characters are really well done. Loved how Sancia was willing to sacrifice herself to save her friend. Gregor's fate is telegraphed nicely about halfway through the book - the alert reader will be wondering about that - and it comes to fruition just like it should. While it's obvious the story is meant to continue on, the book ends at a good stopping point so there's no cliffhangers. It's a really, really nice fantasy world.
