It's Asimov, and it was his very last book. Some think he put a lot of himself and his family into these characters, however, if you have read the previous Foundation books this is a must-read. (Cover art is different)

This is an all right book...

Limited action and characterization, but not too "techie" for sci-fi. No need to slog through paragraphs or pages of techinal description of theoretical science and technology.

As far as the plot... If one isn't already reading or planning to read the entire series, be aware that (despite claims to the contrary) it isn't really a book that "stands alone." Some back history of the series is given in Forward the Foundation, but without reading all of the books preceding this one, the reader will miss out on the true depth and flavor of the entire story of the Foundation. I'm including Asimov's robot novels in this necessary back story reading.

i enjoyed this set - rereading foundation trilogy after several years and then sought out other parts of story.

It's a prequel, of course, but in realtime it was the last book written in the series.
This book is a part of Asimov's Foundation series it talks about events taking place between "Prelude to Foundation" and "Foundation" and it helps pull those two books together.

The novel consists of four parts, each separated by about ten years.Forward the foundation is a biography of Hari Seldon, filling in the areas of his life not previously covered in Prelude to foundation.

Asimov uses this book to tie together his robot books starring R. Daneel Olivaw with the foundation series. Daneel is a major political figure, but it is Hari who is the dominant character. The story is set on the imperial capital of Trantor, and Seldon is both a mathematics professor and the first minister to Emperor Cleon.
