An exploration of the meaning of moral responsibility in literature and daily life. In Shattuck's view the tragic destiny of Western culture has been to gradually erode all sacredness in a continued transgression of all limits. In the quest for knowledge and ever more rarified experience, the link between boundaries and the moral life has been broken. Shattuck hopes that we can yet recover our innocence by reexamining the greatest myths and stories of our tradition.

"No topic is more urgent . . . The courage and justice of the book are remarkable. I feel more sustained confidence in Shattuck's handling of these painfully difficult issues than in that of any other critic . . . Roger Shattuck's book is terrific." DENIS DONOGHUE

Ignorance is bliss or knowledge is power. Is our growing understanding of nature a curse or a gift?
We call ourselves civilized beings and yet because of our civilized ways we have become better killers and we are destroying our own habitats.
Humanity is creating a Frankenstein monster on the face of the earth and it is about to wake up!
Do we need this so called Knowledge?
